Armageddon (PG-13) Violence,
macho comedy and Aerosmith ballads
— Ihe makings of a typical contempo
rary American blockbuster. Imagine (he
pseudo-smads of Contact mixed with
the patriotic energy of ID4 and the
testosterone of Con Air. It's all here:
loud explosions, impending doom and
endless one-liners barked by both
indie and Hollywood actors (and Liv
Tyler). Bruce Willis leads his gruff
team of oil drillers on a mission to
save Earth from an enormous asteroid.
It's all pretty ridiculous ar d unbeliev
able, but highly enjoyable for fans of
this stuff. With Ben “Animal Cracker’
Affleck, Will Patton. Steve Buscemi.
Billy Bob Thornton. Peter "Ruskie"
Stormare and many others. (BL)

Dirty Work (R) Allnough it taxes a
while for tms siliy comedy about a
revenge-for-hire scheme lo gel going,
it's certainly worth a trip to this big beer
hall for a lew cheap yuks. Norm
MacDonald and Aitie Lange play the
inept goofs who try to make enough
quick cash to pay Chevy Chase to per
form heart transplant surgery on their
pop. Jack Warden. Juvenile, dirty, and
kinda fun. Directed by Bob Sagst. (BL)
(Georgia Theatre)
Or. Dolittle (PG-13) Eddie Murphy
stars as the nappv neadeo doctor who
talks to the animals. Expect a lot of low
brow toilet humor (the kids love that
stuff), but little else. Ossie Davis always
rocks, however. Featuring the ‘'oioes of
Chris Rock, Gilbert Gottfried, Albert
Brooks, Norm MacDonaid. and Gary
Shandling. (BL) (Mall Outside)
Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
(R) Director Terry Gilliam accomplishes
the rare deed of translating a classic
piece of American literature to the letter
without fouling it all up. Johnny Depp
does a superb Hunter S. Thompson
imitation and Benecio Del Toro is a
consistent riot as his drug-crazed attor
ney pal as the two wreak havoc on 1971
Las Vegas. Fu.ioy, terrifying, disgusting
and consistently entertaining, this film
documents the waning of the counter
culture revolution with just the right
dose of cynicism. (ML) (Georgia
Theatre)
Hope Floats (PG-13) Sandra Bullock
and Harry Connick, Jr. star in this
slow-moving but enjoyable romantic
drama about a newly-divorced mom
who returns to her Texas home to start
over. This is Bullock's best perfor
mance since... well, ever, but Gena
Rowlands (A Woman Under The
Influence. A Nigh! On Earth) and the
little kids steal the screen.
Recommended. (BL) (Beechwood)
The Horse Whispeier (PG-13)
Robert Redford d ;f ects and stars in
this visually impressive romantic
drama set in rugged Montana A

Living In Oblivion (R) 1994
Check out Steve Buscemi back in
his indie-film heyday (before Con
Air and Armageddon swiped up
and choked him with smarmy one-
liners). He plays a struggling low-
budget filmmaker in this award
winning film directed by Tom
DiCillo. Being a film about making
a film, it gets kinda confusing
when the actors start to become
the characters they play, but that's
just the point. Black and white.
With Dermot Mulroney, James
LeGros and Catherine Keener. (ML, BL)
(Athens Regional Library)
Madeline (PG) Based on the uiidrenls
books by Ludwig Bemelmans, this
charming comedy provides welcome
relief for kids too young for the tacky
summer blockbusters. Fargo's Frances
McDormand stars as Miss Clavel, a
kindly schoolmarm in Paris looking
aftei 12 bright young girls. The runt of
the group is Madeline (Hatty Jones).
She's the most adventurous of the
bunch; unafraid of heights, circus ani
mals or the mischievous Spanish boy
next door. Bring the young kids. Highly
recommended. (BL) (Mall Outside)
The Mask Of Zorro (PG-13) Antonio
Banderas dons the mask in this sword-
slinging romantic adventure.
Imprisoned for two decades, Zorro
(Anthony Hopkins) must find a succes
sor to fight his old enemy, the former
Spanish governor of Alta California
(Stuart Wilson). He finds a bandit with a
troubled past (Banderas) and trains him
to become the new Zorro. Of course,
new Zorro falls in love with the old
Zorro's curvaceous daughter, Elena
(Catherine Zeta-Jones). Opens Friday.
(BL) (Commerce Drive-In, Mall Outside)
MiiIm (G) Ming-Na Wen provides the
voice for Mulan, a young Chinese girl
who leaves home disguised in her
tattler's armor to defend imperial China
against the Huns in this animated
Disney adventure. Nice animation, lousy
songs. The funniest character is the little
dragon (with the voice of Eddie Murphy)
who looks after Mulan as she heads to
battle. Check it out and bring a kid. (BL)
(Mall Inside)
Out Of Sight (R) A complex and low-
key film about a smug but likable bank
robber named Jack Foley (George
Clooney), he busts out of prison, works
on a romance with the sexy federal mar
shal on his tail (Jennifer “Got Back’
Lopez), and mixes it up with various
low-lifes and pals (played by Ving
Rhames, Don Cheadle, Steve Zahn,
Albert Brooks and others). Great pho
tography, cool music and solid writing.
Very funny, very unpredictable. Based
on the novel by Elmore Leonard.
Directed by Steven Soderbergh
(sex, lies and videotape). Highly
Recommended. (BL) (Beechwood)
A Perfect Murder (R) Gwyneth
Paltrow and Michael Dougias star in
this low-energy but somewhat sus
penseful mystery. Will the trophy wife
fall for Viggo Mortensen? Will the rich,
husband get away with his shenani
gans? Worth a look at a matinee price.
(BL) (Mall Inside)
The Professional (R) 1994. Before
French actor Jean Reno strutted around
New York City in Godzilla., he played a
“professional" hit man in this tough and
stylish film by director Luc Besson (The
Fifth Element). Things gel tense when
the hit man’s 12-year-old neighbor
(Natalie Portman) talks him into target
ing a corrupt drug enforcement agent
(Gary Oldman) for revenge Much better
than the tacky Fiftn Element, With Danny
Aiello and Ellen Green. (BL) (Tale)
Quest for Camelot (G) So-so ani
mated adventure set in the days of
yore. Recommended for kids whose
parents won’t let them see Monty
Python and the Holy Grail. A yawn oth
erwise. (BL) (Alps)
Six Days, Seven Nights (PG-13)
Harrison Ford could use a change of
pace. The Han Solo tough-guy bit was
tired long before this and last year's Air
Force One. Here, he and Anne Heche
quarrel on a remote island after a plane
crash while David Schwimmer com
plains elsewhere. Skip it. (BL) (Mali
Outside)
Small Soldiers (PG-13) It's too bad
comedian Phil Hartman had to go out
on such a tacky clunker. !n this violent
toy war flick, a batch of gung-ho mili
tary action figures with chiseled chins
come to life, activated by a military
computer chip. For some reason, they
declare war and proceed to wreck
Hartman's house. Who wrote this? If
they can spend millions on talented
animatronics and computer experts to
create the ‘small soldiers," you’d think
they could afford some decent writers.
Awful. With Kevin Dunn, Kirsten
Durnst and the voice of Tommy Lee
come see our newly expanded store !
