band’s mission thusly: ‘To get this town up and dancing to live
music again and to make pop music that pleases without saccha
rine or excess sweetening." (Five Star Day, Fri. 11 p.m.-12 a.m.)
Empire State Alex McManus (of Vic Chesnutt’s band) and
Florida’s Nackashi brothers make many of their own instru
ments, and make music that’s remarkably beautiful — espe
cially considering it’s made from jury-rigged junk. (Manhattan,
Sat. 12 a.m.)

Aretha Franklin. (Outdoor Stage, Sat. 7:45-8:15 p.m.)
Max Fine Laid-back jazz combo walking in the footsteps of
the giant steppers: Miles, Monk, Trane, etc. (Athens Music,
Fri. 6 p.m.)

ing out prodigious amounts of scummy rock and roll. (Tasty
World, Thu. 12 a.m.)
The Fountains The core of this band are the Andrews bruthers,
Gary and Jeff, originally from New York. They’ve been enticing
audiences in Athens and beyond for a few years now with folk
and folky rock that’s notable for its brains and wit. (High Hat,
Sat. 11 p.m.)
Diana Froiey Fraley's most recent release on Washington,
D.C.’s Skoda Records, entitled Pet My Kitty Mister NYC, is
witty, hip, lo-fi fun. Frolcy, who currently lives in Baltimore, is
also an art therapist. Her press kit says she “puts the ‘fun’ in
‘dysfunctional.’” (Sneakers, Sat. 10 p.m.)
Fuzz) Sprouts Many consider this the
most consistently fun band in
Athens. They can play anything
from Abbey Road (in its entire

Grace An ethereal mix of anti-folk and what could be called
“pro-folk.” Violin, cello and acoustic guitars. (Blue Sky, Sat.

Guthrie Band. (Athens Music, Sat. 4 p.m.)
Michael Guthrie Band Mike Guthrie played rave-up, mod-
style Brit-rock from 1966 to 1973 in the South as a young man,
and admits that the region wasn’t quite ready for the style. His
new self-released album, Right Honourable Friend, revisits
those times with some of the old bile intact. He even covers Pete
Townsend’s “My Generation.” (Outdoor Stage, Sun. 6:45-7:15)
Hal 9000 This Atlanta-area quartet’s slick, self-released, self-
titled CD touches on the range of popular regional styles, from
gothic Southern jangle to metallic-tingcd funk; it’s held together
by the emotive vocal stylings of sax and guitar player Braxton
O’Neal. (5th Quarter, Sat. 10-11 p.m.)
David Ryan Harris Former lead singer of Follow For Now,
avatars of the late ‘80s black rock/funk rock movemeni. Harris,

12-1 a.m.)

plicated music that rose up against it. (Tasty World, Fri. 12 a.m.)
Hayride Paul Trudeau (formerly of the late Harvey Milk) sits in
for drummer (and Flagpole writer) Ballard Lesemann for the
AthFest performance from this established Athens trio. While
other bands scoff at classic rock, Hayride takes it to its logical
conclusion: a land where Bad Company no longer feels like
making love. (High Hat, Thu. 11 p.m -12 a.m.)
The Healers One of Athens’ most enduring blues bands. Texas-
style, original and high quality. (High Hat, Sat. 12 a.m.)

Stones and The Pretenders. (Outdoor Stage, Fri. 7:15-8 p.m.)

this acoustic guitarist and singer. (Cneakers, Thu. 11 p.m.)

Band and late R.E.M. Their most recent album is the self-
released Boxing Nostalgic. (Outdoor
Stage, Sat. 3-3:45 p.m.)
Joules Kelvin Passionate local
trio in the vein of local boys like
Vigilantes of Love and Five-
Eight. (Washington St. Tavern,
Fri. 10-11 p.m.)
Jucifer Local critics’ darlings.
Singer Amber Valentine plays
a bass/six-string contraption
tc back up all manner of
female whispers, yelps, keens
and growls. Drummer Ed
Livengood is the only other member
of the band; he plays as if he’s got an Eric B and
Rakim tape on his Walkman.
(Lunch Paper, Sat., two sets,
first starts at 11 p.m.)
Jug Rock Performance artist Deonna Mann, country Star Room

University student. (Outdoor Stage, Sun. 4:30-4:45)

rock. (Tasty World, Fri. 10 p.m.)
