melancholy catch-phrase tunes of songwriter and musical omni

Lisa Majersky Athens solo performer who specializes in cack
ling, crafty, quiet original rock and roll songs. (Outdoor Stage,
Sun. 2:45-3 p.m.)
Mike Mantione Lead singer and guitarist of Athens scene-lead
ers Five-Eight whose high-nasal voice plumbs the depths of the
human experience. Recent, experimental solo work featured on
WUOG 90.5 FM has been marked by an inimitably poignant
melancholy. (Five Star Day, Fri. 12 a.m.)
Alex Marquez Local singer currently between styles: he’s been
moving away from Springsteenish love anthems and toward
stranger materia! propelled by keyboards and drum machines.

Dave Marr Leader of Athens honky tonk stalwarts The Star
Room Boys. Marr knows what he’s doing: he bums his own
peculiar-smelling incense at the shrines of Waylon, Merle
Haggard and Buck Owens. (Manhattan, Thu. 11 p.m.-12 a.m.)
Todd McBride Heartland music from the gut from the former
lead singer of the Dashboard Saviors. (Outdoor Stage, Fri. 7-
7:15 p.m.)
Christie McCarthy Emotionally charged folk from this San
Francisco Bay Area singer-songwriter. (Globe, Thu. 10 p.m.)
Medagiia D’oro Imagine an orchestra warming up, but drinking
and drinking and drinking as they do so, then never getting
around to playing the piece »hey were meant to play. Medagiia
D’oro usually accompanies local performance artist Deonna
Mann, and on some nights can be the best hand in town. Not,
however, for the meek. (Jittery Joe’s parking lot, Sat. 10 p.m.)
A Mercy Union Tnc last show from the wearers of Athens’
skinniest ties. AMU plays clean-cut punk that’s usually equal
parts Huskcr Du and The Jam. (Lunch Paper,

Mishap This band is known for packing the
kids into the Georgia Theatre with tight, good-vibe
folky pop songs. Their recent
independent release Mowing
Ride is crystal-clear and radio

Dr. Irene Moon and the Melted Men The Melted Men’s elabo
rate costumes, dadaist performance-art sensibilities and irrever
ent (mis-) appropriation of DJ technology have established them
as one of Athens’ preeminent anti-rock outfits. Performance lec
turer and filmmaker Irene Moon’s expeditions into the bowels of
various media is usually driven by a preternatural fascination
with the insect kingdom. (Jittery Joe’s, Fri. 10 p.m.)
Nash featuring Dave Zwart The new band from charismatic
once and-future scenester Zwart, who for years headed the irrev
erent Athens garage-rock outfit D.A.I.S.Y. (Outdoor Stage, Sat.
7-7:45 p.m.)
The New Poor An as-yet-to-be-disclosed project fronted by
Winery owner Chris Springfield. (Winery, Thu. 10-11 p.m.)
Now Denial Self-described “Athens band with an Athens
sound ’’ Self-described influences are more English than
Georgia: The Smiths, The Cure, Bauhaus, The Church, Joy
Division. (40 Watt, Thu. 12-1 a.m.)
Nowhere Fast Exemplary local jazz trio featuring guitarist
Daniel Nettles. Bebop with the odd bossa nova twist. (Winer),
Sat., 2 sets at 10 and 11 p.m.)
The Nugz Members of Slackdaddy playing under an assumed

Jason O’Neal-Butler Local solo acoustic performer. (Boar’s
Head, Fri. 9 p.m.)
Ode to Abbey Snellville, Ga., power-pop three-piece. A name
inspired by Wordsworth and a penchant for the stadium-rock
guitar solo. (Athens Brewing Co., Thu. 10-11 p.m.)
One Big Eye Local rock played at window-rattling volumes.

Neal Pattnian This Athens blues musician is best known for
playing with a full hand in the gritty Chicago style, but his more

rural solo work with just voice and harmonica (presumably the
manner in which he’ll be performing Sunday on the outdoor
stage) is even more revelatory and affetling. (Outdoor Stage,
Sun. 7:15-7:30 p.m.)
Adam Payne '"'ne of Athens’ most overlooked and underappre
ciated acoustic singer/songwriters, specializing in loss, heart
break, bad times, self-doubt and utter despair. (Outdoor Stage,
Fri. 6-6:15 p.m.)
Pen To Plough Pensacola, Fla. quartet that takes its cue from
the days when Minneapolis was in its flannel-flying heyday.
Noisy and ultra-melodic. (Engine Room, Fri. 10 p.m.)
People Who Must A veteran Augusta pop combo whose most
recent EP, the self-released Never Ending Road To Success, was
recorded by Jeff Tomei of Smashing Pumpkins and Matchbox
20 fame. Expect hooks, harmonies and shimmering guitars. (5th
Quarter, Sal. 11 p.m.)
Planet Jive A heavy, heavy hom section anchors this chicken-
fried local funk band otherwise notable for their wacky buoyan
cy and adherence to the precepts of the Mothership. (Athens
Brewing Co., Fri. 10-11 p.m.)
Papa Play Dramatic, somewhat symphonic music from this
brand-new Athens hand, which promises experiences ranging
from Mozart to Metallica. (Outdoor Stage, Sun. 2-2:45 p.m.)
Posh Toner This local reggae band has found significant success
on the local scene with its accessible, smile-inducing classic reg
gae formula. Their recent self-released CD (featuring one of the
most delightful odes to the drug coffee ever written) is entitled
Mesmeriddim. (40 Watt, Fri. 10-11 p.m.)
Pong Michael Lachowski (former Pylon bassist), owner of
Candy record store, presents a near-all-nighter of electronic
music, computer graphics and dance: 11 DJs and two live acts
will be participating, and delivering a range of sounds from the
various subgenres of drum ‘n’ bass to downtempo to hip-hop.

Post Silicon-chip driven, hyper-
speedy speedmetal from this duo
whose timekeeper is a drum
machine that knows nothing of
human emotions or the human
errors caused by leg cramps. The
result is a punishingly fast and
dizzyingly precise angst-o-

Quadrajets Guitarist J. Jerome once summed up his
band thusly: “We’re just a
at’s usually equal I
bunch of rednecks who listen
to AC/DC, trying our damnd
est to play punk rock.” In three short years, they’ve released
three albums, an EP, eight singles, and a recent split-10” with the
Lord High Fixers. They’ve established a reputation as a foam-
ing-at-the-mouth surt of live act. (High Hat, Thu. 10-11 p.m.)
Radio: Tahiti One of the most sonically blasphemous bands in
Athens, and possibly on earth: clattering Neanderthal rhythms
and an arsenal of honrorshow vocals. (Jittery Joe’s, Thu. 11 p.m.t
Redneck GReece Deluxe Local honky-tonk hero Greg Reece’s
simultaneous sendup and homage to the country lifestyle has
attracted an Athens following that is nearly Koreshian in intensi
ty. Underneath the 55-gallon hat is a droll gem of a songwriter
with a deep understanding of American musical styles. (Outdoor
Stage, Sat. 5-5:45 p.m.)
Rocket 350 Fairly new, traditional rockabilly trio: upright bass,
trap kit and guitar. Songs about hot rods, girls and the like.
(Outdoor Stage, Sun. 5.45-6:15 p.m.)
Albert Ross Band Mostly electric blues, though the bass play
er’s been known to take up the washtub bass to anchor a few
swing numbers. (Athens Brewing Co., Sat. 10-11 p.m.)
The Runs Headed up by big Jimbo Stacy, former lead singer of
the LaBrea Stompers, The Runs play no-holds-barred punk with
a dangerous sense of humor Stacy is known for launching pro
jectiles at audience members, and the band recently dressed up
as fraternity and sorority members in attempts at mocking what
are lovingly known among downtown Athenians as "The
Milledge People.” (High Hat, Tliu. 12 a.m.)
Salt Local rock and roll. (Washington St. Tavern, Sal.
10-11 p.m.)
Sanni This Erlangen, Germany native delivers melancholy-
sweet acoustic guitar and vocals. This is her last show before
returning to Germany indefinitely. With Peter Ladner. (Blue Sky,
Thu. 10 p.m.)
Santa Clause This band’s drummer and singer, Scott “Spyder”
Lynch, has played in some of Athens’ most notoriously bizarre
bands ($hackler, l/jot ‘N’ Booty). Over in Atlanta, he’s best
