Service Industry Unforgiving ur-punk in the vein of Iggy and
the Stooges by a band conceptually dedicated to extolling the
virtues of Athens’ restaurant workers and fall-down drunks.

The S«*xaholics Featuring guitarist Jeff Walls (of Guadalcanal
Diary, Hillbilly Frankenstein) and his wife, ex-Hillbilly bassist
Phyllis Bridges-Walls. Word is they’re a loud, loud guitar band.

The Seymores Richmond, Va. four-piece postcollegiate rock on
Pitch A Tent, the label run by David Lowery (Cracker. Camper
Van Beethoven). (40 Watt, Fri. 11 p.m.-12 a.m.)
Nathan Sheppard Claiming to know hundreds of covers, and to
have written almost as many originals, local guitarist, solo per
former and bandleader Sheppard draws steady crowds to local
gigs. They come for his brand of respectfully rendered classic
rock and his evocation of laid-back evenings on old back porch
es. (DT s. Fri. 11:30 p.m.)
Sight Unseen Serious, sweeping, atmospheric rock from this
local three piece. Singer Sanjay Kothari sings with both bravado
and reserve. (Mean Mike’s. Thu. 11 p.m.)
Sister Spit The San Francisco Bay Times, a gay and lesbian pub
lication, described Sister Spa as “Twelve queer women writers
and performance artists,” a collective that came together at a
regular “dyke open mike." (Lunch Paper. Thu. 8 p.m.)
Six Pou.id Rock Saxophone-dominated Athens classic rock
band mixing originals and covers. Their press kit says they
range from “reggae to blues to rock io world

pop made by three Atlanta-based Americans and British native
Ian Webber. Currently in the studio woiking on their second LP.

This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb Pensacola three-piece that pushes
the music at the scruffier limns of the folk canon into the most
giddily sloppy and DIY realms of post-punk. (Engine Room,
Thu. 10-11 p.m.)
Thumb Thumb singer Bryan Cook’s spastic stage presence-
made for some of the most memorable scenes in the film Athens,
Ga. Inside/Out when he was with his old band Time Toy. Now
he fronts Thumb, a fun, funny, catchy, devil-may-care garage
outfit whose style will probably be trendy in 30 years or so. (Ga,
Bar, Thu. 12 a.m.)
Tone Deaf Radio Athens resident and British native Christopher
Harrison looks to his homeland for inspiration for his well-con
structed pop. He embellishes this acoustic-guitar based music
with everything from mandolin to the occasional bagpipes.

William Tonks One of Athens best guitar players, Tonks is
known for adding tasteful country accents to projects like Six
String Drag, The Hot Burritos and Barbara Cue, his own short
lived tribute to cult-circuit gods NRBQ (Outdoor Stage, Sun.
5:30-5:45)
Tony Tidwell and The Scalded Dogs Ghostmeat recording
artists from central South Carolina playing gruff melodic
music with a nod to American roots. (Engine Room, Thu.
11 p.m.-12 a.m.)
Trinket Recently signed to RCA (who will be releasing their
record soon), Trinket plays unabashed glam rock. They’re just
back in town after touring with ESPN’s Xtreme Games tour. As
punk-snotty as Green Day and as glittery' as Gene Loves Jezebel.

Trunk Fire Folk and bluegrass with guitarist Paul Lombard (ex-
Billy James) and multi-instrumentalist Paul Hammond (the latter
from classic Athens bands Time Toy

Space Voyage Ahem Spazzy, jazzy, all-over-the-place rock
music that’s both ambitious and fun. Their new self-released CD

Jean Spencer Local acoustic folk singer/songwriter. (Outdoor
Stage, Sat. 3:45-4 p.m.)
Spoon River Academic jazz backgrounds lend a unique versa
tility to this band’s take on various modem rock formulas. (Five
Star Day, Thu. 12 a.m.)
Sputnik Athens trip-hop/acid jazz collective. Their self-released
local album, Sublunarperspeclives, show's off their adept mix of
sampling technology, live instruments and laid-back hip-hop
grooves. (Boar’s Head, i-ri. 11 p.ni.-12 a.m.)
Squeaky Door Ensemble Downtown Athens-types playing
what’s reportedly their first show. Elements of membership for
merly aligned with the likes of Medaglia D’oro and Lowlife
Quartet. (Manhattan, Sat. 11 p.m.-12 a.m.)
Susan Staley An Indiana native, Staley moved to Athens six
years ago, and has been gracing local audiences since with tradi
tional American music played on a solid-body electric dulcimer.
Her repertoire, she admits, features “a lot of minor-key murder
ballads. It’s very edgy, dark sophisticated... definitely not what
many people thirik of as traditional music.” (Outdoor Stage, Sat.

Todd Sionesifer Singer for erstwhile local improvisational
groove-rock band Underwaterfall. Expect some of the old

The Sugardaduys Drummer Brian Crane used to be a road
manager for the Cramps, and it shows with his rarely-appearing
local band, who deliver ample supplies of surf and garage. (Ga.

Vaudeville Brad Morgan and Donnie Chambers are the heart of
this well-read, dark combo who are growing more experimental
as they grow older sometimes they’re joined by a DJ, some
times with a trombonist, sometimes with flickering TV sets. (40

Velvet Jones and Sex Appeal Wild, crazy, big ol’jazz-funk
with horns. Occasional forays into world music. (Athens

Victory Bowl Bob Rising, former drummer with Chicago bands
Poster Children and Seam, moved to Athens in 1997 and started
up this four-piece <hat goes for big guitar sounds and melodies,
and sometimes goes to that place where the new wave meets the
old. (Mean Mike’s, Sat. 11 p.m.-l2 a.m.)
Whalebone Local folkish covers and originals with a contempo
rary country bent and a penchant for ballads. (5th Quarter, Thu.
10-11 p.m.)
Where’s Anita? Athens vets who describe their work as “local
acoustic music where original traditional folk meets saxo
phone.” (Globe, Sat. 10 p.m.)
Wide Receivers Shrill, inside-out, atonal, repetitive, nervy,
funky stuff you’d imagine coming from disaffected British art
school kids circa 1978. (Hole in the Wall, Thu. 11 p.m.)
Will’s Drama Atlanta modem rock five-piece with a single cur
rently getting morning airplay on 99X Their most recent, self-
released record is entitled Escaping the Wheel. (High Hat, Fri.
10-11 p.m.)
Woodenhorse Jacksonville, Fla., political punk in the
Washington, D.C. hardcore style. Their 19% Ghostmeat album
is entitled Product. (Engine Room, Fri. 11 p.m.-l2 a.m.)
Wunderkind Originally from Albany, Ga., this Athens band
.plays hard, melodic, aggressive, teen-angst rock and roll. (Five
