Armageddon (PG-13) Ridiculously
unbelievable, grossly patriotic, big-
money blockbuster thal keeps you on
the edge of your seat start to finish.
Asteroids conveniently pelt some of the
most populated cities on Earth, and the
big ‘Global Killer’ is on its way. A team
of rowdy roughnecK oil drillers is blast
ed into space to drill and nuke the suck
er. Billy Bob Thornton sells out, Steve
Buscemi goes nuts, Ben Affleck makes
an ass of himself. Liv Tyler is the token
hot chick/cheesy love interest, and
Bruce Willis saves the planet Action-
packed and pretty damn scary. Call me a
sucker, but I fell for it. (Beechwood.
Commerce Drive-In)
Bound (R) A sexy crime thriller directed
by brothers Andy and Larry Wachowsky
in which the two leading ladies. Gina
Gershon and Jennifer Tilly mix business
with pleasure while swiping a couple
million bucks from the latter!? crooked
psycho boyfriend (Joe Panloliano).
Gershon and Tilly received the presti
gious Best Kiss award at ‘97’s MTV
Movie Awards for their steamy perfor
mance in this ffick. All you homy col
lege boys should love it! (ML) (Tate
Center)
City Of Angels (PG-13) Nicholas
Cage. Meg Ryan and Dennis Franz star
in this syrupy t A. re-make of Wim
Wenders' beautiful Wings Of Desire.
(EL) (Alps)
Disturbing Behavior (R) A creepy
iimller directed by David Nutter of 17s
The X-Files and Millennium. When
teenager Steve olark (James Marsden)
moves with his family to the picture per
fect little town of Cradle Bay to recover
from the suicide of his older brother, the
kids seem just too good to be true
Suspicions are confirmed when the
school shrink enters the picture to con
vince all parents of a psycho-surgery that
transforms ail rebellious teenagers into
perted angals. Full of fresh-faced young
newcomers including Katie Holmes (The
Ice Storm. and TV’s Dawson's Creek).
Nick Stahl (The Man Without a Face. The
Thin Red Lind), and William Sadler (Bill
and Ted's Excellent Adventure). (ML)
(Starts Fri., Mall Inside)
Dr. Doolittle (PG-13) Eddie Murphy
stars as the nappy-headed doctor who
talks to the animals. Expect a lot of low
brow toilet humor (the kids love that
stuff), but little else. Ossie Davis always
rocks, however. Featuring the voices
provided by Chris Rock, Gilbert
Gottfried. Albert Brooks. Norm
MacDonald, and Gary Shandling. (BL)
(Mall Outside)
Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas
(R) Director Terry Gilliam accomplishes
the rare deed of translating a classic
piece of American literature to the letter
without f*'*ing it all up. Johnny Depp
docs a superb Hunter S. Thompson imi
tation and Benecto Del Toro is a consis
tent not as his drug-crazed attorney pal
as the two wreak havoc on 1971 Las
Vegas. Funny, terrifying, disgusting and
consistently entertaining; this film docu
ments the waning of the counterculture
.evolution with |ust the right dose of
cynicism. (ML) (Georgia Theatre)
Hope Floats (PG-13) Sandra Bullock
and Harry Connick, Jr. star in this slow-
moving but enjoyable romantic drama
about a newly-divorced mom who
returns to her Texas home to start over.
This is bullock's best performance
since...ever, but the great Gena
Rowlands (A Woman Under The
Influence. A Night On Earth) and the lit
tle kids steal the screen. Recommended
(BL) (Beechwood)
The Horse Whisperer (PG-13)
Robert Redford directs and stars in this
visually impressive romantic drama set
in rugged Montana. A little fuzzy, but
well-acted. With Sam Neill, Chris
•Cooper and Dianne Weist. (BL)
(Beechwood)
Kurt and Courtney (NR) This “banned
from Sundance* film by controversial
documentary filmmaker extraordinaire
Nick Broomfield (Aileen Wuomos: The
Selling of a Serial Killer. Heidi Fleiss:
Hollywood Madam, and Fetishes)
begins as a portrait of a musical genius
(Kurt Cobain) and is quickly led astray
into the seedy underworld of rock n‘ roll
and heroin. Despite pulling out every
trick in the book. Courtney Love and her
lawyers |ust couidnt stop the release of
this film which portrays the raunchy
rock star-seeking grunge queen turned
Hollywood glamour girt as a violent and
manipulative junkie golddigger who
drove her husband to the edge and goes
as far as to suggest she even had him
killed. Tabloid theater at its sordid besi.
(ML) (GA Theater)
Lethal Weapon 4 (R) Mel Gibson and
Danny Glover are back as the long-loved
cop buddy duo of Riggs and Murtaugh.
Rene Russo returns as Gibson's girl
friend who continues to kick ass even
though she's quite knocked-up. and Joe
Pesci cnce again is the butt of many a
cruel joke as Leo Getz, the bumbling
con-man-turned cop. Add the always
hilarious Chris Rock as the new johnny
on the block to the standard mix of inter
national bad guys, shoot outs, car chas
es. and explosions with a bit of family
drama to boot, and you have all the right
ingredients the action-flick excitement
fans of the Lethal Weapon series expect
to love. (ML) (Beechwood. Commerce
Drive-In)
Madeline (PG) Based on the children's
books by Ludwig Bemelmans, this
charming comedy provides welcome
relief lo r kids too young for the tacky
summer blockbusters. Fargo’s Frances
McDormand stars as Miss Clave!, a kind
school marm in Paris looking after 12
bright young girls. The runt of the group
is Madeline, played by the almost-adult-
like Hatty Jones. Bring the young kids
Highly recommended. (BL) (Mall
Outside)
Mafia (PG-13) Director Jim Abrams
(Airplane!. Top Secret. Hot Shots.
Ruthless People, and the Naked Gun
series) takes a long overdue jab at the
organized crime film genre. A young
Vincenzo Cortino is forced to swim from
his family)? homeland in Sicily to start a
new life in America. Played by the leg
endary Lloyd Bridges (Airplane!. Hot
Shots, High Noon), Vincenzo is a big
time crime boss whose time has come
to hand over power to one of his sons
(played by Jay Mohr oi Saturday Night
Live fame and Billy Burke). Adhering to
themes of family loyalty and treachery in
the tradition of the Godfather films,
Mate promises to add plenty or Abrams’
trademark sight gags and parody. Also
starring Olympia Dukakis (Moonstruck,
Steel Magnolias) and Christina
Applegate (Don't Tell Mom the
Babysitters Dead, and TVs Mamed With
Children). (ML) (starts Fri., Mali
Outside)
The Mask Of Zorro (PG-13) Filled
with visual cliches, this move adheres to
all the rules of the classic Hollywood
heroic action-adventure. Imprisoned for
20 years, the hero formerly known as
Zorro (Anthony Hopkins) escapes ano
takes a petty thief with a score to settle
(Antonio Banderas) under his wing.
Banderas is transformed seemingly
overnight from a scraggly drunk to a
suave and sophisticated hero extraordi
naire who immediately (and quite con
veniently) captures the heart of Hookins'
long-lost daughter. Elena (Catherine
Zeta-Jones). Although the movie seems
to be nothing but three endless hours ot
swordplay and explosions, the blood
and guts gore is kept to a minimum, and
there is no gratuitous sex scene. This is
too bad, with two super sexy co-stars, a
steamy romp in the hay might have
made the movie somewhat interesting.
As it is, the characters are flat, the action
scenes hard to buy (although the sword-
fights are well-choreographed), and the
entire thing is just too long. The best
that can be said of Zorro is that it is rela
tively clean family entertainmerf and a
pretty safe way to get rid of the kids for
an entire afternoon. (ML) (Mall Outside.
Commerce Drive-In)
Mulan (G) Ming-Na Wen provides the
voice foi Mulan, a young Chinese girl
who leaves home disguised in her
father's armor to defend imperial China
against the Huns in this animated
Disney adventure. Nice animation, lousy
songs. The funniest character is the little
dragon (with the voice of Eddie Murphy)
who looks after Mulan as she heads to
battle. Chea it out and bring a kid. (BL)
(Mall Inside)
Out Of Sight (R) This super-sexy film
stars George "he can crack my safe any
day’ Clooney as a suave, smartass bank
robber and Jennifer Lopez as the hot-as-
a-biscuit FBI agent who fails for him.
There's so much chemistry between
these two that a call to the EPA seems in
order. Based on the Elmore (Jackie
Brown) Leonard novel and smartly
directed by Steven Soderbergh (sex,
lies and videotape) with well-timed
flashbacks scattered throughout. Great
performances by Ving Rhames as
Clooney's buddy. Don Cheadle (Boogie
Nights) as the sicko bad guy, and
