Downfall / Atomic Cate
The 40 Watt Club
Among other things, the erstwhile punk-lite American phenomenon known as grunge gave
smart kids an excuse to rock out. As long as they avoided the extended guitar solo and pop-
metal chugga-chugga, they
could avoid the big-haired
guilt complex, make it on
the radio, and get coverage
in "alternative music" mag
azines.
Local band Downfall
goes the obvious next step,
putting the guitar solos
back in, while still trying
for grunge's trademark
downer/existentialist sub
urban ennui. The four-
piece does so with consid
erable musical flash,
adding arena-rock styles of
yore — like Van Halenish
fingerboard stylings — to the
Atomic Cafe opens. (RF)
Downfall
arena-rock styles of today. "Dude," you'll exclaim. “Dude!"
Bottomless cups ot coffee and the odd
surprise guest.
Rockofa (Klassics) Like a jukebox, but
much more aggressive and drunk.
Come on down for the show, just please
don’t get in the Chevy and start yelling,
“Hey, lookit me! I’m a drivin* a car inside
a building 1 ’ They hate that.
Monday, July 27
Patrick Connell (Allen’s) Acoustic
country and classic rock covers. Drunk
idiots beware: I! you scream out
‘Freetird,’*he just may play it.
Day By Tfca River (Boar's Head)
Enthusiastic jam-rock that had the
Georgia Theatre packed during AlhFest.
Their song ’Hanging Out Naked’ has
inspired the entire Flagpole staff to
incorporate ve/y casual Fridays into the
work week.
Gong Show (High Hat) Local nuts get
up on stage and make fools of them
selves, while Jim Stacy looks tall. A
whole heck of a lot of fun, and : ! benefits
the Athens Area Humane Society. Be
there at 9:30 p.m.
Rent Boys (40 Watt) Phil Stair from
Rocket 350 says these Atlantans sound
like ’old school rock n' roll.’ What
does that mean? ’They kinda sound
like the Smiths.’ Well, those
Manchester mope-men were known to
cover Elvis' ’His Latest Flame’ in con
cert, so who knows?
Rocket 350 (40 Watt) Craftsmen of the
fine-tuned, delicate, ’Beer Slut Baby,’
and ’Answer Judge Vicky.’ Rockabilly
with a capital ’ill.’ Their AthFest outside
performance lacked the trio’s bassist,
who will hopefully return for this show,
which will feature guitarist Phil Stair in
his white wife-beater T-shirt.
Tuesday, July 28
"Acoustic Underground" (DT*) The
widely popular open-mike night. Don’t
be dumb, get you some.
T!motfcy Bracy (Live in the Lobby.
90.5) Solo turn from the Lindsey
Buckingham of local conglomerate The
Mendoza Line. Call in and request a few
songs from their new EP. Like Someone
In Love, or just berate him (tell him
John sent you).
Dynamite High(Lunch Paper) Sonic
Youth/Superchunk meets the Who.
Indie-smarts with muscle. If ycu're
lucky, they’ll throw in the odd Pere Ubu
or Tobin Sprout cover. If you're even
luckier, guitarist Curtis Brown will sweat
on you.
Dimes (Lunch Paper) Porn Orchard
alumni Curtiss Pemice and Sam Mixon
open for Dynamite High with a sparse,
low-key batch of songs centered around
acoustic guitar and keyboards. Word on
the street is, “Man, these guys are old!'
Marvel Kind (40 Watt) This Chicago
quartet are Throwrug labelmates with
Victory Bowl* Bob Rising. The sounds
on their new David Baker (Mercury Rev)
produced EP, Ninny, supposedly ’origi
nate in raw, improvisational chaos.’
according to the sticker on the shrink
wrap. Yep.
Will Rehberg (Alien*) Acoustic medi
tations centering on the ’Galaga-vs.-
Kiss pinball* argument that burdens
Allen*.
Mark Spence (Athens Brewpub) 19-
year-old Atlanta folk singer with har
monica. Although Mark writes songs
that wrestle with the existential nature of
human existence, he wants you to know
that music ’is bes. enjoyed with a dry
Chardonnay."
Songwriters’ Showcase (High Hat)
Come see the locals bear their souls,
featuring Danny Hutchence of Bloodkin,
Todd McBride. Jay Markwatter, and for
mer White Buffalo drummer Alberto
Salazarte.
Victory Bowl (40 Watt) Songwriter
Bob Rising wears some of his atmos
pheric-rock influences (think
Swervedriver) on his sleeve, but has
honed his skills during drumming stints
with Seam and the Foster Children, and
imparts his own frightening personality
on the songs. Rumors of a name change
to Golden Bowl are totally unfounded.

Patterson Hood / Speed Devils
Lunch Paper
What is it about white wife-
beater T-shirts and pompadours
that make rockabilly so appealing
more than 40 years after its birth?
Is it our innate love of the classic,
dangerous rebel image? Are we
grasping for a time when life was
planned out for most? Or is it just
a love of loud, fast, fun rock 'n' roll
played by guys with nice torsos?
Whatever. Boston's Speed Devils
stomp their way into Lunch Paper
this Thursday, bringing their tat
toos, reverb, and self-titled CD
along for the ride. Highlights of the
night will surely include "Booze
Party" and "Devil Crives a Buick
(But Jesus DriVes My Chevrolet)."
Don't miss opener Hood, who must
be the busiest acoustic country-
punk badass in town, with or with
out the Drive-By Truckers. (JB)
