HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE
ATHENS SUMMER
MUSIC EXTRAVAGANZA
the 40V r 'ott Club
'July 8 11 1998
preppy, late-70s pop institute, the kind
attended by well-adjusted teenage girls
driving to their tennis lessons in the
summer in the lamily station wagon —
the one with the simulated wood-grain
paneling that's peeling ott and the col
lege stickers stuck on the back Songs
like "Too Like You" and “Tomorrow
Will Be Like Today’ sound so blissfully
square — so much like early Squeeze
or 'Elvis Costello — that you wonder
how this guy could iiave sweet-talked
himself into the realm ot the home-
boys
Wnat's hip-hop and late ‘90s about
Money is that he’s a pastiche guy. an
indiscriminate raider ot the world ol
sound. So in between the two afore
mentioned songs you get the instru
mental “Monkey Dot,’ which, with its
melodica-over-Moog formula, sounds
like Augustus Pablo taking bonghits
with Gary Numan.
The changes keep coming tor 18
tracks, from afro to latino to electro
funk. The eclecticism keeps it all
breezy-fresh, though it also detracts
from Mr Mark's ability to present a
cohesive or distinctive musical person
ality — it’s no wonder he's famous as a
sideman. But the world needs sidemen.
The world also needs well-crafted, light
pop records, especially in the summer.
Pep this one in the dash; it’s a great
soundtrack for a trip to someplace
sandy and sunny.
