EXCESS
all
It all started in 1987 on the Licensed to III tour.
When my friends Kelly and Amy and I heard the
Beastie Boys were playing New Orleans, we knew we
had to figure out a way to meet them (a way that
didn't involve sex, of course: we were well-raised
girls). We realized that our chances of hanging with
them were much better if we were in a band. The
fact that we couldn't play instruments didn't mat
ter: The Blue Meanies were formed. (Yeah, now at
least two ba^ds have taken that name — not sur
prising since it's from Yellow Submarine.)
First, we made T-shirts. Kelly was in art school so she drew a design
— three stick girls with skater hair. A photographer friend offered to
shoot some fake promo pictures for us since he wanted something to
enter in a contest anyway. Because his shots won the contest and our
friends had started wearing our T-shirts, word got around about the
"bond," and we were actually asked to play.
The Beastie Boys, meanwhile, were set to play the Saenger Theatre
in New Orleans with Fishbone and Murphy's Law opening. The day of
the show, we hung around the backstage entrance of the Saenger for
hours trying to look nonchalant while we assessed the situation. When
a couple of pasty-faced punk guys finally walked over to us to chat, I
took a gamble and said that sure we were there to see the B-Boys, but
we were really psyched about seeing Murphy's Law. (I knew these guys
weren't in Fishbone.)
Then we hit them with the news that we were an all-girl punk band.
In five minutes we had passes. Opening bands can be so easy. I had
never even heard of Murphy's Law.
Later in the afternoon the Beasties showed up for sound check, and
we tried to act like we didn't notice. Our first contact with an actual
Beastie Boy was with Ad-Rock, who came over and asked Kelly if she
would dance in the cage. She declined and he suggested that the three
of us dance in it together. She suggested he get a working girl from
Bourbon Street. By the looks of the poor woman who turned up, that's
eless. They weren’t the only
e sins of a scam artist.
just what he did.
Backstage after the show was a little disappoint
ing. The Beasties were either tired or fucked up, and
things were low te-y. Kelly and I were both interested
in making out with MCA — just making out — but
trying to have a conversation with him was impossi
ble, so we lost interest, got our passes autographed
and left.
We had also managed to ta'k ourselves onto the
guest list of the Memphis show, and this one was
much totter. When we arrived at the backstage
entrance, there were a couple of full-on nasty groupies trying to sweet
talk the door guy. After he let us in, we heard one of the hags ask him
why we got to go backstage and they didn't With extreme condescen
sion he answered, "They're a band."
We got warm welcomes from everybody this time, like we were old
pals, and or.e of the guys in Murphy's Law wore a Blue Meanies T-shirt
on stage. We were front ana center in the orchestra pit and at one
point actually got to rap along with a B-Boy who held the mike down
for us and said to the crowd, "YaU give it up for a really good band —
The Blue Meanies!"
We saw more shows on that tour, but that was the high point. From
there I went on to scam my way into hanging w’th the likes of Iggy
Pop, Charles and Di, Vaclav Havei and... well, you get the idea.
Representing ourselves as journalists for a fake magazine, Kelly and
I managed to scam our way backstage at a Check Your Head show, but
by the lit Communication tour, Kelly and I had gone our separate ways
and I was hanging out with a dull boy. so I just bought a ticket like
everyone else and sat in the stands of the Omni. It was kind of sad
really. On the outside I was doing the Patty Duke, but inside I was won
dering if my days of rock fraud were behind me. Recently, however, I've
found myself plotting how I'm going to scam my way in to see the
Beasties when they come to Lakewood Amphitheater in September.
Maybe something with an international twist this time... ©
