Atomic Dogs (Boar's Head)
Obviously big George Clinton tans.
Obviously. Send us a tape.
Patterson Hood (40 Watt) Solo
Drive-By Trucker brings his
acoustic meditations on guns, bull
dozers. and presidential genitalia to
the 40 Watt. Opening for Kevn
Kinney.
Kevn Kinney (40 Watt) Drivin' ‘n’
Crym' frontman with acoustic what
not. Less the Souihern rock of DNC
and more tne mannered poise of
Dylan.
Thursday, August 13
BC (40 Watt) Formerly
Buckdancer’s Choice. See story on
page 17.
Commander Chameleon
(Gasoline Alley) Well, they called to
tell us they weren't from Statesboro,
but didn't say much else. Mere sec
onds ago, just before deadline, they
bring a tape. It’s a humorous mix of
reverb-drenched pseudo-rockabilly,
slight funkiness, and straight-ahead
rock with lyrics stating. “My grand
ma has an afro/And my mom has
one, too."
Diamondback (Georgia Theatre)
Huge, imposing Southern rock.
These guys are ready to go fishing
or racing as per their whim.
Fearless Freap (Tasty World)
Supposedly, this is energetic indie-
funk excitement. These guys came
to town recently, but no one ever
wants to get in touch.
Injected (High Hat) Hard, aggres
sive, heavy four-piece rock from
Atlanta. Opening for Marky Ramone
and the Intruders.
Jay Markwalter (Allen's) Pure
acoustic bliss from the overlord of
Athens country-folk.
Marky Ramone and the
Intruders (High Hat) Former
Ramones drummer brings his cur
rent band to rock you just like the
Ramones did. Sure, the Intruders' “I
Wants My Beer” ain't no “Sedated.”
but we’re talking about a guy with
serious punk rock credentials:
besides the Ramones, Marky (nee
Marc Bell) has played with
Wayne/Jayne County, Richard Hell
and the Voidoids, and Johnny
Thunders. Catch him before he
dies.
Nathan Sheppard (DT's) Rock
covers and originals from-an
Athens veteran.
Spatial (Tasty World) This may
well be the greatest band ever
known to man. Or maybe not. Send
tape.
Vibraswirl (40 Watt) Their 1995
release, The Ideal Brain Tonic, is a
catchy mix of hard-rocking riffs,
jangly melodies, and the occasional
funky beat. Apparently they sound
different now, but no one really
seems to know in what way.
Friday, August 14
Bare Jr. (Georgia Theatre)
Energetic rock opening up for
Jason and the Scorchers.
Ben Altman (Tasty World) A taste
ful classical guitar recital for the
Happy Hour crowd. 7 p.m.
Cookieman (Gasoline Alley)
Geddy Lee fronting Lynyrd Skynyrd
trying to play Smiths songs. Or
something like that.
Drive-By Truckers (High Hat)
Great country-punk songwriters
who mix humor and sentiment per
fectly. See Box.
Japancakes (40 Watt) Mostly
instrumental drone-rock in the vein
of Stereolab and Glenn Branca.
Their shorter pieces are often
incredible, locking the audience
into the groove, but tne longer jams
truly test one’s patience.
Jason and the Scorchers
(Georgia Theatre) Pure-blooded
rock and roll. See story on p. 17.
Math (40 Watt) This partly local
five-piece is planning to record a
six-song EP of their “indie rock-
pop" at Elixir soon. The band
describes their sound as “Sonic
Youth meets Flaming Lips."
Normaltown Flyers (Allen's) True
veterans of Athens music bring
their country rock covers and origi
nals to Allen's. Anyone who has
seen their album, Play Somethin' I
Like, knows how much the Flyers
love this burger joint.
Redneck GReece and the
Stump Broke Steers (High Hat)
Country funny-guy and whoever he
can rope into playing with him See
Box.
Splitz (Bailey's) Featuring former
members of the Common People's
Band. Remember to dress properly.
Truckadelic (High Hat) High ener
gy redneck cow-rock. See Box.
Vlewmaster (40 Watt) See Box.
Saturday, August 15
Bloodkin (High Hat) Acoustic-
based mix of blues, folk and rock,
often punctured by haunting dobro
and harmonica.
Breathlanes (Globe) Guitar
experimenter John Miley will most
likey bring an acoustic trio (com
prised of himself, drummer Jamie
DeRevere, and singer Alyssa
Hadley) to The Globe tonight.
Accompanied by the films of
Colman McCord.
Jill Carnes (Globe) Best known
for her paintings, Carnes brings her
unique acoustic songs io The
Globe. She’s an Athens original
who makes Daniel Johnston sound
like the Academy of St. Martin-ln-
The-Field. Opening for Breathlanes.
Ceiling Fan (40 Watt) Ambitious
pop that teeters between XTC and
Van Halen. Commonly mistaken as
quirky just because they sing about
Virginia and metal bands. Don’t lis
ten to the pundits. Try 'em for your
self.
fhe Debonaks (Bailey’s) Beach,
oldies, and rock across the street
from Taco Bell.
Hard Candy (40 Watt) Opening
for Ceiling Fan and the
Possibilities.
