Bubbapalooza Vol. 2 CD Release Party
Drive-By Truckers / Redneck GReece and the
Stump Broke Steers / Truckadelic
High Hat Music Club
Tonight the finest batch of dirtbalts you're most likely to hear outside the trailer park convene
to inaugurate the release of the second Bubbapalooza CO. Featuring 10 bands, including the Lost
Continentals, the
Diggers, Slim Chance
Experience, and tonight's
three bands, the disc cel
ebrates the life and
music of Gregory Dean
Smalley, the bullheaded
redneck genius musician
who succumbed to AIDS
in 1996. The festive,
drunken side of the "red
neck underground" is
perfectly examined
tonight, with the humor
ous, dark sentiment of
the Drive-By Truckers
(whose song, "The Living
Bubua" is a tribute to
Smalley), the humorous
wisdom of Redneck GReece, and the humorous drinking of Truckadelic, who will be performing a
mix of Greg Smalley covers and originals. See some of the best cow-punk in town and buy a CD.
Proceeds from the disc go to support Smalley's son Raymond. (JB)
Truckadelic
guitar oriented jam rock covers and
originals.
Legitimate Businessman’s
Association (Winery) Truly talent
ed (and tasteful) jazz from these
Winery regulars.
Tiie Possibilities (40 Watt)
Common response at Possibilities
shows: “I saw these guys two years
ago and ihey really sucked. Wow,
they’re really good nowadays!” Bob
Spires and the Lane brothers have
come closer to perfecting their
mesh of Beatles-esque harmonies
and peculiar rock ‘n’ roll. Catch ’em
before guitarist Kevin Lane hits
Europe with Jack Logan.
Randall Bramblett Band
(Georgia Theatre) These guys are
so not alternative. See story on p. 6.
Skillet (Allen’s) Countrified
Southern rock featuring such num
bers as “Tennessee Bacon,” and
“Woman Who Won’t Say Please."
Just when you think you got them
pegged, though, Skillet throw in
something like the Velvet
Underground’s “What Goes On."
Trunk Fire (High Hat) Opening for
Bloodkin.
Monday, August 17
Patrick Connell (Allen's)
Bittersweet acoustic laments to
which to drink beer.
Jeremy Joel (DT's) Acoustic
beauty from the man himself.
Tuesday, August 18
Acoustic Underground (DT's)
Open mike night for the acousti
cally oriented. Word has it that Bill
Scoggins may show up f or a song
or two.
Apollo’s Creed (40 Watt)
Energetic pop from Atlanta.
Playing with Bittersweet Nothing. *
Bittersweet Nothing (40 Watt)
Mix of ’80s college-rock mentality
(such as the Connells) and ‘90 alt-
rock paradigms (a la Better Than
Ezra). These guys are still a little
rough around the edges, but that
only adds to their charm.
Creekwater Sound (Flanagans)
Multi-instrumental jam collective
with musical leanings towards the
Doors and Allman Brothers territo
ry
John James Quartet (Winery)
Quality jazz fronted by the talented
sax player John James.
Loud American Tourist (40
Watt) Pop-rock opening for
Apollo's Creed and Bittersweet
Nothing.
Patterson Hood and Mike
Cooley (Lunch Paper) Patterson
will simply not stop playing this
week. These longtime friends and
songwriters meet tonight to play
material from their old band,
Adam’s House Cat. AHC used to
exist in Muscle Shoals, Ala., from
‘85-'91. Some of their material,
such as “Buttholeville,” has made
it into the Drive-By Truckers'
repertoire. “More punk and less
cow' is Hood's description.

Japancakes / Viewmaster / Math
40 Watt Club
Not in the mood for raucous, drunken, Southern country-rock? Then try Viewmaster,
Hoboken's reserved, melodic guitar popsters. On tour for their new album, No Car Garage,
Viewmaster mix John Hughes
prom soundtracks with angu
lar, Sonic Youth and Talking
Heads artiness. In other
words, another victory for
the '80s revival, which
arrives along with all that
new wave/power pop guitar
tomfoolery that seems to be
sprouting up. It's not bad
stuff, but nothing substan-
tiaL These guys would've
been great stuff to make out
to in '83, and, hell, maybe
they still are, but Viewmaster
ends up being as meaningful as that quick fed in the back of your parent's car. Best of all will be
the sporadic brilliance of the headliners, Japancakes. (JB)
