• A description: A veritable musical
potluck, with elements of pop, folk, and
hip-hop. The band + akes its name from a
1963 song by blues legends Sonny Terry &
Brownie McGhee
• The band releases its major label debut
Magazine (Breaking/Atlantic) or September
1. Breaking Records is cc-owned by Hootie
and the Blowfish.
• The album is a big departure for the band
— louder and more in-your-face than previous indie releases. The track “Come Out Clean" features Dee
Dee Ramone shouting out his trademark “One-two-three-four!"
• Despite all their success, the band still lives together in the same downtown house in Charleston, S.C.
they've lived in for years.
Jump, Little Children play with Danielle Howie and the Tantrums at The Georgia Theatre on Thursday.
September 3.
• A description: Somewhere between
the Violet Femmes and Woody Guthrie.
• The band has gone through many dif
ferent line-ups since 199C. After much
experimentation, the band has decided
to revert to its original three-piece
incarnation.
• Since December, the band has written more than 50 new songs. Fountains material new and old is
about folklore, history, and that which binds people together.
• On All-Hallows Eve, the band plans to perform an entiie Violent Femmes set — in drag.
The Fountains

mandolin, vocals
Gary Andrews — guitar, bass, harmonica,
vocals

The Fountains play the High Hat Friday, September 4 with Farmer Not So John and Kitty Snyder.

O ne’s first experience
observing Belloch is
disconcerting
Watching vocalist Dave
Spalding double over, extend
his hand in a sort of crippled
crumple and bellow “Who
gave you monkey paw?” is a
befuddling sight, especially
when backed by some truly
aggressive heavy' metal and
7/8 time signatures.
In a musical universe of
bands such as Rage Against
the Machine and Korn, who
mine similar heavy-funk terri
tory with grimaces and dour lyrics, Belloch’s
unpretentious joy is a refreshing jab in the
ribs. Of course, it’s a bitter pill for newcom
ers.
“Don t worry,” drummer Chad Cooper
said after a recent Boar's Head performance.
“These guys have a great sense of humor.”
“We want to make people laugh,” added
guitarist Hano Leathers. “In a metal sort of
way.”
The musicians have earned their stripes
in the Athens scene. Leathers and Spalding
are former members of Prozak, while Cooper
has played with both Addison Blue and
Flood City Shootout. They are also a rarity in
Athens: capable performers who are serious
about touring and recording, yet refuse to
take themselves too seriously.
For their upcoming show, the band plans
to adopt stage names: Leathers will be
“Grasshoppa.” Why would a man with such a
rock-ready name as Hano Leathers want to
be known as “Grasshoppa”? “It's probably all
the marijuana,” explained Leathers. “We
want Athens to come out and laugh with us,”
he added. “And if they can’t do that, they
can come out and laugh at us.”
