Air Bud: Golden Receiver (G) The
hasty follow-up to last year’s enjoy
able family flick about a young boy
struggling to fit in at a new school
alongside his dog, Buddy. Ich habe
Angst vor dem Hund. Starring
Kevin Zegers. (Mall Inside)
And God Created Women (NR)
1957. Part of the “Celluloid Vixens"
film series. Brigitte Bardot stars as
the sexy, scantily-clad “vixen" who
flirts with young men and prances
around while on vacation at St.
Tropez. Directed by Roger Vadim.
(Tate)
Armageddon (PG-13) Bruce “ZZ
Top" Willis stars as a deep-dnlling
expert v/ho tries to keep his top
employee (Ben Affleck) and his
pouty daughter (Liv Tyler) away
from each other while accepting a
gig saving the planet from impend
ing doom. Pretty ridiculous sum
mer cinema enjoyment.
(Beechwood)
Autumn Sonata (NR) 1978.
Directed by the highly-regarded
Ingmar Bergman about a world-
famous pianist (Ingrid Bergman in
her final role) who, after a long
absence, confronts her daughter
(Liv Ullman) in a tense visit. If
you’re unfamiliar with Bergman’s
work, try to make time for this one
this week. Swedish with English
subtitles. (Tate)
The Avenger* (PG-13) Snotty spe
cial agents John Steed (Ralph
Fiennes) Emma Peele (Uma
Thurman) stmt and flirt as they bat
tle the villainous Sir August
DeWynter (Sean Connery) in this
stylish and tacky screen version of
the ‘60s English TV show. Not rec
ommended. (Mall Inside)
Blade (R) Wesley Snipes stars as
comic book character Blade, a half-
human/half-vampire superhero
with a bloody chip on his shoulder.
N’Bushe Wright co-stars as the
“bitten" semi-love interest. Stephen
Dorff stars as the leader of a group
of Gen-X vampires on a quest to
appease the “Blood God" and take
over the world by snacking on infe
rior humans. High-tech, extremely
gory, and surprisingly entertaining.
With Kris Kristofferson, Udo Kier
and Traci Lords. (Mall Inside)
Dazed And Confused (R) Young
indie-director Richard Linklater’s
entertaining portrayal of typical
American high school life in the
gioovy year 1976. As goofy as
Cheech & Chong, as authentic as
Fast Times, and 100 percent more
enjoyable than 54. Good. (Tate)
Dead Again (R) 1991. British thes-
pian Kenneth Branagh directs and
stars ?s an LA detective in this styl
ish and clever suspense/thriller. He
tries to find the true identity of a dis
turbed woman (Emma Thompson)
who seems stuck in and endless
nightmare involving a 1948 murder
and a pair of scissors. (Tate)
Dead Man On Campus (R) MTV’s
dunderheaded college campus
comedy about death and GPAs.
With the floundering Tom Everett
Scott and "Zach," who is not saved
by the bell. (Mall Outside)
Ever After (PG-13) Drew Barrymore
and Angelica Huston star in this
cleverly re-vamped Renaissance-
era fairy tale of a tough Cinderella-
ish servant girl and her Prince
Charming. This avoids much of the
treade-scrag vibe of recent, similar
flicks such as Homeo & Juliet and
The Man In The Iron Mask and con
centrates on the feisty story. (Mall
Outside)
Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
(R) If you missed director Terry
Gilliam's bold screen version of the
Hunter S. Thompson book on the
big screen, try to catch it here.
Johnny Depp and Benecio Del Toro
star as the tag-tearr druggie “jour
nalists" on assignment in Las
Vegas. It’s mean, weird, well-acted
and doesn’t make much immediate
sense. However, there’s an orang
utan in it. (Tate)
54 (R) A disappointingly dull and
point'ess drama set in 19/9 in the
notorious Studio 54 disco in
Manhattan. Ryan Phillippe stars as
Shane, a bus boy who flees the
drudgery of New Jersey for the
excitement (i.e., unprotected sex,
gobs of drugs, liquor and dancing)
of NYC. This film never gets off the
ground, teasing us in the opening
few minutes with images of 79
(gas lines, President Carter, Iran,
etc.) then moping into a tangled,
uninteresting story about unlike-
able disco aficionados. A decent,
although uneven, performance
from Mike Myers makes this
almost watchable. Almost. Not rec
ommended. With Neve Campbell,
Salma Hayek and Ron Jeremy.
(Mall Outside)
Halloween: H20 (R) Jamie Lee
Curtis and “Michael Myers" pay
tribute to the Halloween series in
this mildly scary 20th Anniversary
sequel. It has some pf the right
ingredients for genuine horror, yet
lacks the intensity of the original.
(Mall Outside)
How Stella Got Her Groove Back
(R) More of a bizarre attempt to
portray an older woman's personal
triumph than a genuinely captivat
ing romantic drama. Angela Basset
stars as Stella, the highly paid 40-
year-old who heads to Jamaica on a
whim with her pal Delilah (Whoopie
Goldberg) to “get her groove back."
It’s never clearly established that
she lost it in the first place. I don’t
buy it. Co-starring Taye Diggs as
the 20-year-old groove-giver with
the faltering island accent.
(Beechwood)
Knock Off (R) Hong Kong-style
action fiick starring the recently
cleaned-up Jean-Claude Van
Damme as the butt-kicking sales
man who, as always, fights bad guy
terrorists — who, as always, are
typical Russian thugs. Lots of ore-
dictabie dialogue and lengthy fight
scenes, with the same dash of
macho humor utilized in Van
Damme’s recent Double Team. With
Rob Schneider (“Saturday Night
Live"), Lela Rochon and Paul
Sorvino. (Mall Outside)
Madeline (PG) The young Hatty
Jones stars as the mischievous
Madeline, the little French girl in
the classic Ludwig Belemans chil
dren’s books. With Fargo's Frances
McDormand and bunch of polite
youngsters. Recommended. (Alps)
Metropolis (NR) Diractcr Fritz
Lang’s influential 1926 silent film
portraying the future as a grim
balance between technology and
humanity. Disturbing. Classic.
Freak out. (Athens Regional
Library).
Tf.3 Muppets Take Manhattan (G)
1984. Muppets creator Jim Henson
was a genius, and director Frank Oz
highlights that fact in this musical
