friend’s reading and then split." The acts in Variety are
selected with the intention of mixing things up a bit and
maintaining audience interest throughout the program. The
lineup includes poetry readings by Jermaine Foster and
David Oates, music by folksters String Theory and theatrical
performance art pieces by Royal Kids and Acme Radio

Harvest and Folk Festival.
The Hcivest rest at Sandy Creek Park. 10 o.ro-2 p.m. FREE! Kicks off the
North Georgia Folk Festival. Folk Fest times: Friday 7*10:30 p.m and Saturday
1-9:30 p.m. Tickets ore $2-$6.
The 24th Annual Harvest Festival has brought the young
and old together for generations. Traditionally held on the
grounds of the Lyndon House Arts Center, the fest will take
place at Sandy Creek Park in conjunction with the North
Georgia Folk Festival, as the Lyndon House is under con
struction. Folks from the Athens Community Council on
Aging will be demonstrating old-time skills and time-honored
crafts including basket weaving, bread making, broom mak
ing. butter churning, crocheting, painting, pottery, soap mak
ing, weaving, and w’ood carving. Approximately 20(X) school
children are expected to attend this years event to enjoy
activities including storytelling, puppet shows, wagon rides,
folk music and dance, and visits from farm animals.

Bogart Fall Festival.
In downtown Bogart, beginning at 9 a.m. FREE! "Cycle Around Bogorf begins
at 8:30 a.m. $20 to register.
This traditional small-town festival begins with a 50-mile
bike ride around town. The parade is scheduled for 1C a.m.
Entertainment scheduled throughout the day includes
gospel, country, and bluegrass musicians as well as square
dancers, line dancers, and baton twirlers. Kids can keep
extra busy enjoying a train ride, face painting, a petting zoo,
pony rides, a moonwalk, crafts, a dunking booth, and a race
car demonstration. Arts and crafts booths will feature
quilts, tie-dyes, pottery and jewelry. Barbecue chicken will
be prepared by the Bogart Fire Department. For more info

Bluegrass Festival.
At the Walton Agricultural Center pavilion just south of Monroe. Noon until dork.
$8 (kids under 12 are free!).
If this weekend’s Folk Fest at Sandy Creek isn’t enough to
quench your thirst for old timey tunes, the Bluegrass
Festival in Walton County should do the trick. Groups sched
uled to perform include Cedar Hill, Harmony Grits, The

Universal Pickers, Free Range Chickens. Counterpoint, and
the Danny Banks Band. An open mike will be set up between
bands for those who want to take the stage at the spur of the
moment. Festival-goers are encouraged to bring their own

Eroica Trio.

The members of this all-female trio have ties that go back
to their childhoods but they did not come together as a trio
until 1986 when they were students at Juilliard. Since win
ning the prestigious first prize at the Walter F. Naumburg
Chamber Music Competition in 1991, The Eroica Trio has
risen to the top of the classical music world, playing in some
of the globe’s most esteemed concert halls. This evening's
program includes selections from Mozart and Schubert. Call

Atlanta Symphony Does
Gershwin.
At Hodgson Hall, UGA campus. 3 p.m. Pre-concert lecture at 2:15 p.m. Tickets
are $35-$39 (UGA students are half price; group discounts are available).
The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra celebrates the 100th
anniversary of the birth of George Gershwin with a program
consisting solely of works by this great American composer.
Gershwin is lauded as an innovator who brought popular
and classical music together and is considered a legend of
Broadway. His musical An American in Paris became a popu
lar movie in 1951 starring Gene Kelly, but more contempo
rary film buffs would note the Gershwin tunes that make up
the unforgettable score of Woody Allen’s Manhattan. This
evening’s program includes the overture to Strike Up the
Band, the Catfish Row Suite from Porgy and Bess, Lullaby for
