Batman Returns (PG-13) 3:00, 6:00, 9:00 (Tu. 9/29)
Armageddon (PG-13) The booming
asteroid disaster flick starring Liv Tyler,
Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck. It’s as
ambitious as Deep Impact (which also
stars a huge piece of space junk head
ing toward Earth), and as tacky as Con
Air (which also stars Steve Buscemi as
a squirrety passenger). (Beechwood)
Austin Powers (PG-13) Mike Myers’
hilarious spy/secret agent spoof. He
plays both the toothy British agent and
his evil nemesis. Very silly. With
Elizabeth Hurley. (Georgia Theatre)
The Avengers (PG) Ralph Fiennes,
Uma Thurman and Sean Connery star
as cartoonish Brits, all dressed up with
nowhere to go. They chase each other
around with knives and swords. James
Bond this is not. (Alps)
Batman Returns (PG-13) 1992.
Michael Keaton stars once again as the
caped crusader in one of the last watch-
able Batman flicks. Worth a look, if only
to see Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman,
Danny DeVito as The Penguin and
Christopher Walken as Max Shreck.
(Tate)
Beetlejuice (PG) 1988. Director Tim
Burton's quirky teen-goth comedy about
a couple who. with the help of a shabby
goblin named Beetleiuice (Michael
Keaton), haunt their old house after
passing away. With Alec Baldwin, Gina
Davis, and the witchy Winona Ryder.
(Tate)
The Big One (PG-13) The sarcastic
and mischievous Michael Moore's
recent follow-up documentary to his
edgy Roger And Me (also playing this
week). While on a book tour. Moore
sneaks off to badger various American
companies who are busy downsizing,
but can't clearly explain the reasons
why. This time around, Moore eventual
ly targets a very scary Nike CEO. Look
for Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen and many
others. (Tale)
Blade (R) Urban comic book stuff done
right. Wesley Snipes stars as the stone
faced half-vampire/half human in this
extremely gory, surprisingly entertain
ing bloodsucker flick. With N'Bushe
Wright. Kris Kristofferson, Stephen
Dortf, Traci Lords and Udo Kier. Enter
with a sense of humor. (Mall Inside,
Commerce Drive-In)
Dead Man On Campus (R) MTVs
vacant-minded comedy about college
freshmen who drink, smoke and screw
their way through their first semester,
then attempt to scam some good grades
by arranging a suicide. Absolutely
unfunny. Staring Tom Everett Scott.
(Mall Outside)
Evei After (PG-13) Angelica Huston
and Drew Barrymore star in this clever
and teary Renaissance-era love story.
Newcomer Dougray Scott plays the
prince to Barrymore's tough Cinderella.
(Mall Inside)
54 (R) Writer-director Mark Christopher
sure screwed this one up. Instead of
telling a bright and engaging story
about the notorious Studio 54, or the
strange New Yorkers who inhabited the
thing, he offers a lame Boogie Nights
plot about a New Jersey cherub (Ryan
Phillippe) and his boring rise and fall in
the ■‘scene.’ With Mike Myers, Salma
Hayek and Neve Campbell. (Mall
Outside)
Free Tibet (NR) A documentary of the
hugely successful 1996 Tibetan
Freedom Concert held in San
Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Tibetan
Buddhism meets American youth cul
ture. Featuring the music of A Tribe
Called Quest, The Beastie Boys, Beck,
Bjbrk, De La Soul. Foo Fighters. Sonic
Youth Pavement. Smashing Pumpkins
and many others. All proceeds benefit
the Milarepa Fund for Tibet. Monday. 10
p jn. (Georgia Theatre)
Gertrude Stein: When This You
See, Remember Me (NR) A docu
mentary (is a documentary is a docu
mentary) about writer Gertrude Stein,
focusing on her time in Paris from 1905
through the 1930s, with an emphasis on
her relationships with such artists as
Pablo Picasso, T.S. Eliot and Thornton
Wilder. (Athens Regional Library)
Halloween: H20 (R) Jamie Lee Curtis
returns after 20 years to scream, run,
hide and confront the shy and weird
Michael Myers character. (Mall Outside)
How Stella Got Her Groove Back
(R) How? She (Angela Bassett) went to
Jamaica with Whoopie Goldberg and
slept with a younger man (Taye Diggs).
Not too “groovy.’ huh? Mildly funny at
times, but mostly confusing and silly.
Don't bother. (Beechwood)
Knock Off (R) A European jeans com
pany executive and his boorish
American sidekick get caught selling
“knock offs’ — cheap counterfeits.
They immediately get caught up in a
confusing series of scenes involving
Russians with micro-bombs, sloppy
fist-fights, green explosions and unbe
lievably un-funny jokes. This is
absolutely the worst Jean-Claude Van
Damme movie I have ever seen. It
makes absolutely no sense. The action
sequences are extremely poorly execut
ed and filmed. Rob Schneider looks
ridiculous alongside Van Damme, as do
Lela Rochon and Paul Sorvino. (Mall
Inside)
Microcosmos (G) 1996. An extraordi
nary close-up look into the insect world
from filmmakers Claude Nuridsany and
Marie Perennou. It documents the inter
actions between various insects with
Incredible photography, very little narra
tion and tasteful backing music. Sort of
a microscopic Koyaanisqatsi. Don’t
miss this on the big screen. (Tate)
Mulan (G) The solid and impiessive
animated feature from Disney about a
young Chinese girl who poses as a sol
dier to fight the invading Huns. Eddie
Murphy supplies the voice of the feisty
dragon sidekick. Very funny. (Alps)
One True Thing (R) See Movie Pick.
(Beechwood)
The Parent Trap (PG) The young
Lindsay Loan stars in a dual role as the
estranged twin sisters determined to
reunite their parents (Dennis Quaid and
Natasha Richardson). Oceans, cute
laughs... little else. (Beechwood.
Commerce Drive-In)
Roger And Me (R) 1989. Filmmaker
Michael Moore's rage against indiffer
ence. This is a rough, confrontational
documentary about corporate America
and massive downsizing in the late
1980s. He targets General Motors in his
hometown Flint, Mich., and tries to cor
ner executive Roger Smith with his
cameras rolling. Very effective and
appropriately uncomfortable. (Tate)
Ronin (R) According to Japanese leg
end, “Ronin’ are former samurai forced
to wander the land and work as hired
bandits. Robert De Niro plays an
American “Ronin’ in this new action-
thriller directed by John Frankenheimer
(The Manchurian Candidate). Co-star
ing Jean Reno (Godzilla, The
Professional), Stellan SkarsgSrd (Good
Will Hunting and many others. Opens
Friday. (Mall Outside)
Roundets (R) Matt Dam^n (Good Will
Hunting) and Edward Norton (Primal
Fear) star as leather-assed poker
grinders in this tense, well-written, dry
drama about two friends who can't help
but fall deeper into the New York gam
bling underworld. Great film. Brush up
on your card-game vocabulary beiore-
hand. With Gretchen Mol. Martin
Landau and John Turturro. Check out
former Athens drummer Ben Mize on
the Counting Crowes tune during the
credits! (Beech-wood, Commerce Drive-
In)
Rush Hour (R) An arrogant LA detec
tive (Chris Tucker of Friday, Money
Talks) reluctantly teams up with a mod
est Hong Kong detective (martial arts
funny guy Jackie Chan) to locate a kid
napped girl. One of this year's funniest
buddy comedies. Light, energetic and
worth the trip. The strong cast includes
Elizabeth Pefa (Lone Star), Tom
Wilkinson (The Full Monty and Tzi Ma
(Dante's Peak). (Mall Outside)
Saving Private Ryan (R) Spielberg's
disturbingly realistic depiction of D-Day
and WWII. This brilliant drama allows
the viewer to experience what soldiers
endure: the horror of combat, the
anonymity of military life and the numb
ing effect of witnessing too many people
die. Starring Tom Hanks. Edward Bums,
Jeremy Davies and many others.
(Beechwood)
Simon Birch (PG) A small town misfit
with a heart of gold named Simon Birch
(lan Michael Smith) is convinced he is
an instrument of God and will one day
become a hero... and he does. This
film deals with spirituality, friendship,
acceptance and other warm, fuzzy
themes. Well-acted and well intended,
even if a little bit disjointed. With Ashley
Judd, Oliver Platt and Jan Hooks.
Recommended. (Mall Outside)
Sliding Doors (R) Gwyneth Paltrow
stars in this unusual British “what-if?"
romantic comedy about a young woman
who misses a train (and barely misses
catching her cheating boyfriend in the
act) in one story, but catches the same
