Cat Power / Smoke
40 Watt Club
Guitarist and singer Chan (pronounced "Shawn") Marshall is Cat Power. Well, she and whoever
else happens to be performing with her at the time. After relocating to Manhattan a few years
ago from her native Georgia, Marshall collab
orated in the studio with Sonic Youth drum
mer Steve Shelley and guitarist Tim Foljahn,
performed countless solo gigs and released
several records. Look for the albums Myra Lee
(Smells Like Records) and last year's What
Would The Community Think? on Matador.
Marshall's dark, soulfuL stripped-down
music has been described as "intense and
bewitching" by Interview and "quiet, slow
and strong" by her pal Chris Lopez of The
Rock*.V Veens
Cat Power's rawest record Moon Pix
(Matador), recorded in Australia last
December with two-thirds of The Dirty Three,
will be released this week.

Tammy Wynette Tribute
The High Hat Club
During the '92 Presidential campaign, when Hillary Clinton announced on 60 Minutes, Tm
not sitting here like some little woman standing by my man like Tammy Wynette," Tammy
demanded an apology, and got one. One can
only wonder what Hillary would have to say
about her own Tammy-like dedication in these
post-Lewinsky times.
It seems a lucky coincidence that a slew of
local musicians are coming together for a trio-
ute to Tammy Wynette, the First Lady of
Country Music, just in time for Flagpole's
women's issue. As ar. artist, Wynette always
meant to portray the inside story of a woman's
relationship experience and all its pitiable
truths. And when you hear her sing her heart
breaking lyrics, maintaining the melodies witn a
magical voice that always seems on the verge of
cracking and breaking, choiring hack tears ready
to erupt into miserable wails, you understand
and forgive her every word. Sadly, many of us
have been there. As much as we hate to admit
it, we'd give anything to go back.
Tonight, the backup band Trunk Fire —
including Paul Lombard, Paul Hammond, Ken
Schenk, Tim Adams, Dave Blackmon, and John
Niff — will accompany vocalists Anne
Richmond Boston, Dana Downs and Alice Berry as they interpret works from the Wynette canon.
Atlanta's Laura Tyler & the Back Seat Drivers open. (ML)
