ATHENS, CA SOSOS
MORE SUCKING
Ted Rail (“College is For Suckers,” Sept.
2] seems to have the same idea about col
lege that 90 percent of all other Americans
have. Rail believes that college is meant to
enable one to earn a lot of money and get
their share of “The Promise” that he deri
sively mentions so many times in his arti
cle. He seems to be one of those people
who “can’t find it within themselves to do
what<they want".
Rail should remember that the primary
purpose of our educational system is to
turn out people who will obediently take
their places in our “winner take all soci
ety; to grab their share of the inequity
while disregarding the inequity.
The solution to Rail’s dismay is to real
ize that “The Promise" is a bunch of crap
that is perpetuated by “The System” to
ensure a sufficient number of greedy
drones to keep “The System” going.
However, that should not dismay people
from going to college. One goes to college
to learn all about “The System." Then, one
should take what one has learned and use
it to work toward changing “The System”
to one that is decent and equitable for
more of us.
A fine example of how to properly use a
college education lies in David Dellinger, a
60-year social activist and Yale graduate
who has been fighting our down-with-peo-
ple-up-with-profits system with great suc
cess over his life.
1, too, have not reached the monetary
“Promise" of our system. But I don’t care.
My undergrad and graduate education has
made me a very potent activist in fighting
the parts of the system that 1 have focused
on. And this makes me happier and healthi
er with each day that I pursue it. If that is
not success, I don’t know what is.

Thank you very much for your enticing
article on Nugi’s Space [City Pages, August
26], While I had never met Nu^i myself I
feel like I must have encountered him one
way or another. We all know a number of
“Nufis,” musicians or not, people we love
and who are struggling with clinical depres
sion in similar ways he had been. Sadly, too
few end up seeking help with their ailment
for which there are almost always a num
ber of possible treatments. The still too
widespread stigma attached to mental ill
ness and misinformation about treatment
options are often accountable for that. It
gets worse when you see people calling for

know that this latter circumstance hap

Needless to say, it is a magnificent idea
Nuci’s parents had to set up prime practice

I want to commend you on the comics
special. I truly enjoyed it. It was good to
see local artists get a chance to express
themselves in print. 1 hope to see more in
the future.

MORE USELESS
THAN COLE
Dear Friends: I am a collector of newspa
pers from Georgia. I have 5000 newspapers
in my collection from all over the world. It’s
my hobby and I want to become a recorder
holder of the Guinness book. It’s a pity l
have not your newspaper. Please, if you
can, send me the issue of your newspaper.
I’d be glad to get it. Thank you before
hand.

MORE ON EUNKE
This letter is in response to Funke
Sangodeyi’s response to David Fairbairn’s
letter. I must say that I am shocked by her
complete lack of journalistic integrity.
David presented a well-thought out letter
of criticism directed at Ms. Sangodeyi, yet
her only response to that was to start sling
ing insults. I found nothing redeeming in
her response to explain her poor reviewing
skills, and in my opinion she only succeed
ed in proving David right
Instead of an intelligent rebuttal sup
porting her position, all she really succeed
ed in doing was showing her ignorance and
petty childishness. I’ve read plenty of
reviews written by Ms. Sangodeyi, and
other than roliing my eyes at her incessant
need to indie-name drop, I always assumed
she was an intelligent and fair reviewer. 1
now doubt her motives and ability, and any
f Jture reviews she writes for Flagpole will
be met with skepticism. Keep in mind, I did
not agree point for point with David’s let
ter. I had a problem with Slut too. But
David’s letter did raise many good points.
It was well written, and meant to be con
structive.
Funke lashed out in spite, and showed
me how small a person she really is. Her
a*m was to huit someone, which was
David s main complaint in the first place, so
obviously he has a very valid point. Ms.
Sangodeyi, 1 now have no choice but to
chuckle at anything you write in the future.
Oh, and if you find the time, please tell
everyone that my band is crap too, it would
be a fine compliment to be in the same
catagory with a great band like Michael.
