NliCTS SPACE: On Thursday, Oct 8, the Nuci Phillips Memorial
Foundation will celebrate the construction of Nun's Space at
the warehouse located on the corner of Williams Street and
Oconee next to the old church steeple. The foundation, begun by
Nun's mother Linda Phillips, plans tc convert the warehouse into
a multifaceted building where musicians can practice their craft
The space is dedicated to Koncak guitarist Nuci Phillips, who
committed suicide in November 1996. There will be food, drink,
and performance by Drip and Turnstyle and a collaboration
between David Barbe and Nuci's brother, K.P. Devlin. Read more
about this unique concept next week, but right now, Mrs. Phillips
and Executive Director Hans Peter Dietrich need volunteers to
help out on the 8th. Call Hans Peter at 354-0323 if you can offer
your services that night
WHERE TO START, OH, WHERE TO START: The deluge of music con
ference information has begun, so lets start with the small and
soon-to-occur and finish witi; that big, bloated load of 1999
Texas cowpie. To begin: St Louis, Mo., will host the MRMF Huric
Festival from Oct. 8-11, featuring 120 bands from around the
nation. Joining the surreal keys of New Orleans' Mr. Quintron and
the sickening-cute pop of Illinois' Wolfie will be Athens' own Elf
Power and Off Montreal, one of whom will probably put on a fairly
rocking show, while the others wistfully contemplate leaving the
music profession behind for a bed full of kittens and an auto
graphed copy of The Little Prince. There will also be “symposia"
(as opposed to those crude “panels" at other festivals) and a mar-
■ ketplace, which "promises to be a varied, vibrant and fun forum
for anyone with a product, service, or idea." I'm thinking hookers.
No where in the literature does it explain what MRMF stands for,
although those of you familiar with the multi-day fests can proba
bly figure out what the “MF" means. Full registration is S75 until
Oct 1, er, that is, tomorrow, and $100 after tomorrow. Call (314)
615-6699 for further info on registration, or visit
www.rftstlcom/mrmf.

ROUND TWO: Elf Power will also be heading for the CMJ Music
Festival to be held in Times Square, NYC, on Nov. 4-7. They will
join Atlanta comrades such as those ultra-cute Ultrababyfat girts
and those ultra-British Tender Idols girls, as well as a host of
other bands you'd thoughy you'd never have to see again, includ
ing Satan's shoe-shine boys The Misfits and that band you found
your parents making out to last week, ? and the Mysterians.
Hopefully, Elf Power will get to sit at the same lunchtable as
► aniel Johnston, Apples in Stereo, Mix Master Mike, and some
of the other interesting acts playing that fest Todd Haynes' film
Velvet Goldmine will also be shown. Produced by local gadabout
Michael Stipe, the film is a fictionalized account of the 70s glam
rock scene and has apoarently prompted a dissatisfied David
Bowie to announce the production of a full-length film adapta
tion of his Ziggy Stardust album. As per above, if you can get your
hands on a form by Thursday, registration is $315, after that,
$370. Call (516) 498-3150 for further info on registration and
student discounts.
AND FINALLY, STRAIGHT INTO THE CRAPPER: They brought you
King's X in '87. Barenaked Ladies in '91. Lisa Loeb in '93. Days
of the New in '97. And who knows what other atrocities they will
inflict in 1999, when South by Southwest invades Austin, Texas,
from March 17-21. Well, now, wait I see here they got a picture
of Nashville Pussy guitarist Ryder Suys playing at Emo's in black
leather pants and a leopard-print bra. Hmmm. Well, hell, maybe
this festival thing ain't such a bad idea after alL Now, where was
I? Oh, yeah. Interested? As always, the $10 registration fee
deadline is Oct 9, while the late application deadline (with $20
fee) is Nov. 16. They'll need a three-song cassette or CD, as well
as a photo, bio, and press kit blah, blah, blah. You know the
drill. Applications are available here at your friendly SXSW sponsor
Flagpole, so come on by if you think you're lucky.
I AM THE DJ, I AM WHAT I PLAY: Oust a reminds that every
Monday is Candy Night at Hole in the WalL DJ Que Z (aka Harry
Marquez, UGA alum, former WUOG DJ, and self-proclaimed “No. 1
fen" of some horrendous rock outfit known as Stuntdouble) gave
us the buzz to let us know that this weekly DJ showcase, spon
sored by elcctronica store Candy, was still happening. Contact

DAVE BARBE SAYS WE CAN ALL CATCH A RIDE TO ATLANTA WITH
HIM: So we can check out his former Sugar bandmate Bob Mould
performing at the Variety Playhouse on Oct. 3. .Bobby's got a new
album out titled The Last Dog and Pony Show, and from that title
you may discern that this will be Mould's last tour with a full
electric rock ensemble. Which means that you better not miss this
show, 'cause, sadly enough, he ain't coming to Athens. By the
sound of the new album, it's about time for a change of pace,
but of course, the curmudgeonly Heckler hasn't really dug much
of the former Husker Du guitarist's work since his stunning and
brilliant solo debut Workbook. Then again, I'm an asshole. Tickets
are $15; the show starts at 9 p.m. with openers Varnaline.
Contact Variety Playhouse at (404) 521-1786 with any questions.
"THIS IS A GOOD THING I AM TRYING TO DO FOR MUSIC FROM
THIS AREA": Yeah, sure, I haven't heard that one this week...
Greg Timms of Flea Circus Music is, in his own words, “a small
upstart music publisher" who is scouting for musicians, songwrit
ers, and bands in the Athens area to take under his wing. If you're
interested in getting help shopping your music to labels, televi
sion, or the film industry, send submissions to 1820 Charles
Yeargm Road, Elberton, GA, 30635, or call (706) 213-8356. All
styles of music are accepted for consideration, but send SASE if
you want your crappy demo back.
I'm so glad we could spend this time together. Send news and
advice to icecoldpbr@hotmaiLcom or call 549-9523.
