SOUL REBELS
THE THIN RED LINE (K) Unlike Steven
Spielberg's recent WWII epic, which
focused on the specifics of battles and
the heroes who (ought them. The Thin
Red Line aims for something much more
abstract, philosophical and intimate: the
salvation of the soul.
Directed by Terrence Malick (Badlands
and Days Of Heaven), the film follows a
battalion of Army riflemen as thev land
on the Japanese-occupied Guadalcanal in
mid-1942. The plot — which involves the
assault of a Japanese-held bunker and
airfield — plays out over two hours with
no real protagonist to follow. Instead,
Malick combines an unusual narrative
style with a sometimes uncomfortably
slow pace to establish a hypnotic, multi
faceted storyline.
While John Travolta, George Clooney
and John Cusack appear briefly as almost
Interchangeable commanders, the most
fascinating characters are played by
lesser-known actors. Bell (Ben Chaplin) is
an intelligent rifleman who musters
enough courage during intense combat
by flashing hack to memories of his wife.
Witt (Jim Cavie/el) is the calm trouble
maker who clings to his own ideals and
resists emotional numbness brought on
by combat. Captain Staros (Elias Koteas)
struggles to earn the respect of his troops
and eventually defies orders from his
superior officer, the hotheaded Colonel
Tall (Nick Nolte). Sargeant Welsh (Sean
Penn) avoids idealism, functioning with
as few emotional connections as possible.
The film trudges along painstakingly as
the soldier's march across the island. By
coupling brief voiceover and scenes with
little action, Malick allows the viewer to
listen in on the soldiers’ random
thoughts: "The closer you are to Caesar,
the greater the fear," we hear. "We’re just
dirt"; “War turns men into dogs";
“Everybody’s looking for salvation, each
like a coal tossed from a fire"; “Who's
doing this to us?" These thoughts some
times contrast with the actions of the
men to whom they belong.
Sergeant Welsh (Penn) and Private
Witt (Caviezal) briefly exchange words in
an early scene wherein Welsh declares,
“In this world, a man by himself is
nothing — and there ain’t nothing hut this
world." The private responds. “You're
wrong there. I’ve seen another world, a
different world " The different world Witt
refers to could be that of the native
islanders — an innocent world devoid of
hatred and violence.
ft’s more likely in reference to a more
spiritual world full of light: Malick makes
repeated reference to various forms of
light through images of lit matches, sun
light through the jungle canopy, moon
light through the trees and what com
rades call a “spark" In Witt’s character.
Such delicate touches make for a war
movie that wouldn't make sense to John
Wayne.
