SOMETHING TO SATISFY THE GUY UPSTAIRS: Ghostmeat
Records has announced the final line-up for the AthFest '99
compilation CD. The lucky few who will encompass all that is
good and true in Athens music for generations to come — or at
least until the end of the year — include The Glands, Jucifer,
Empire State, Vaudeville, Jack Logan, Dayroom, Hayride,
Slackdaddy, Planet Jive, The Lures (surprise, surprise).
Cafeteria, Jennifer Goree, Mike Mantione,
Michael, Dave Barbe, Wunderkind, Drip, and the
Star Room Boys. Now go show this world what
Athens is made of! In other Ghostmeat news, the
little Athens label with the Atlanta address was
recently featured in the fall issue of Backstage, a
publication from the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.
The article by Lisa Love, "label Them
Independents," featured Ghostmeat alongside
Capricorn, Ichiban, Daemon, and other Georgia
record labels.

NOT TO PAT MYSELF ON THE BACK: But does anyone remember the
Heckler's interview with Alternative Press writer Dave Daley this
past summer, re: his "Back to Rockville" article in the August
issue? It seems I commented that AP would be kicking them
selves for ignoring Macha once their Jetset debut was released.
Well, slap my bottom 3nd call me country fried steak, would ya
lookee here at the February issue of AP? It seems that Mr. Daley
has written one of them full-page "Wiie Tapping" pieces on our
beloved Macha. Of course, in standard AP style, only about one-
fourth of the page is text — mentioning just the basic "Man,
these guys went to Indonesia and their music is a little bit dif
ferent than normal," rap — while the rest is crowded up with a
huge photo of the band. Still, congratulations are in order,
guys. Now if only I could get Jetset to market my column...
THANKS TO SOMA FOR THIS ONE: The former Athenian
and current denizen of the Northwest sends word that
the on-line music store Reproductive Records is
offering copies of Harvey Milk's final CD, The Pleaser,
as well as something titled,, The Pleaser LIVE!,
through their website at wwv'.garmcnt-district.com/
store/music/inhouse/reproductive/index.htm.
Since it's difficult to find the record — and especially
this mysterious "live" disc — in stores around town
and elsewhere, anyone interested in reliving the
excitement of seeing the almost-cover band that was
Harvey Milk might want to check this site out.
ME AND JAMES BLOUNT ARE NOT THE SAME PERSON:
Although we share the same initials and waist mea
surements. Regardless, though, I can relay a simple kind word
about our friends in Deacon Brody. Or at least I can try. Here
goes: The Brod are recording a session for the next Rock 103.7
"Live Noise" broadcast. The session will take place this
Wednesday at Full Moon Studios at 8 p.m. sharp. Those inter
ested in attending should call 369-1473, or e-mail
bredbone(a>bellsouth.net.
My fortune cookie told me that I "love life very much." Yeah,
we'll see about that. E-mail icecoldpbr@hotmail.com or call 549-

ONE SLIGHT HOPE FOR THE HUMAN RACE: Camelot
Music, your little corner of Corporate Rock Hell at
Georgia Square Mall, now features a local music sec
tion. According to the Lady Gwenevere of Biz Rock,
Nicki Hendrix, the section is small but growing, fea
turing titles from Drive-By Truckers, Macha, Of
Montreal, the Lee Harvey Oswald Band, Servotron.
Jack Logan, the Olivia Tremor Control, and others.
They'd love to expand it even more, but don't start
heading out to the mall with a bag full of demo tapes
just yet, friends. The store can only order music
through the Valley Distribution company, or through
"major" indies like Merge, etc. But don't, repeat - do
not - call Camelot Records about pimpin' your wares.
Contact Valley Distribution or, urn, get signed to
Merge. Either way, it's a great opportunity to reach
the teeming masses who would've just purchased a
Shania Twain ot Master P CD instead.
SPEAKING OF CORPORATE ROCK: Check out Camelot's
local racks on Feb. 9, when Collective Soul's new
disc. Dosage, hits the streets. The album features
tracks that even your stupid Greek boyfnend can grunt the names
of, like "Heavy," "Slow," "Run," and "Crown." "Run" is also avail
able on the soundtrack to Varsity Blues, that steamy new MTV
movie featuring Dawson's Creek heartthrob James Van Oer Beek
Shoot me.
AT LAST, NOW EVERYONE HAS RECORDED A GARY NUMAN COVER:
My mom's version of "Are Friends Electric?" will be available in
the sprmg. But until then, why don't you point and click your
way tc rte.simplenet.com, where you can download Broom
Room Annex's MP3 recording of Numan's Tubeway Army song.
IT IS TIME ONCE AGAIN: Hans Peter Dietrich dropped by to make
sure that everyone knows that the 1999 Mental Health
Benefit is soon to be upon us. The event - this year dedicated
to the memories of Patrik Keim and Nuci Phillips - will be
organized the same as usual, with various nights of art and
music benefiting the Mental Health Association of Northeast
Georgia. The 40 Watt Club offers two nights of music on Friday.
Jan. 29 and Saturday, Jan. 30. Friday you can check out Jack
Logan. Empire State and Drop Your Weapon (who may or may
not be changing their name to Big Atomic, or even Big Atomic
Featuring Wes Yoakum, depending upon whom you speak to).
Saturday will showcase the talents of Kitty Snyder.
5-8, and Atlantans UltraBabyFat and Marvelous 3.
Tickets will be available at the door for S5. Call 354-
0323 for further info.
