CORRECTION: Last week, Heckler erroneously reported that the
new Athens Musk Factory will include hip-hop in their nightly
musical offerings. The good folks at the new venue would like to
make it clear that although the restaurant/club will occasionally
feature spinning house and dance music, there will be no hip-
hop in the mix. It appears the reasoning behind this is that the
venue does not wish to draw the violent crowds that formed out
side their precursor, the Fifth Quarter.
NEWS: The AthFest '99 Volunteer Committee will meet at Tasty
World on Monday, March 1, at 5:30 p.m. The arts and music fes
tival will swing into action for its third year on June 24-27. The
AthFest '99 CO, featuring all sorts of talented locals, will be avail
able March 2 on Ghostmeat Records. Two parties will celebrate
the CD's long-awaited release with a show at the High Hat on
March 26. featuring Jack Logan, Hayride and The Glands, and at
Tasty World the next night, with Jucifer, Michael, and The Lures.
SPEAKING OF THE LURES: The power pop quartet's debut CD, When
I Was Broken, is set to be released on New York's Ten 23 Records
sometime in April. The band is especially excited about the expo
sure their song, "Goner," is receiving. Not only is it on the new
album, and — surprise — the AthFest '99 disc; it is scheduled to
be on the next Redeye Distribution sampler and the March/April
edition of Magnet magazine's CO sampler. You can find the track
on The Lures' homepage at users.aol.com/thelures/lures.htm.
AND YET ANOTHER TRANSITION: Speaking of web pages, part-time
busker and part-time Flagpole scnbe Bill Scoggins wants the
world to know about his homepage: tinpan.fortunecity/hotel/
783. If you can't find what you want there, you can occasionally
catch Scoggins playing at or near DTs Down Under. Remember
— charity is next to godliness.
BUT WILL THE DUNWOODY MOTHERS UNDERSTAND? Taking that
one step closer to appearing at your nephew's bar mitzvah, the 8-
Track Gorilla is heading down to Atlanta's Star Bar to "perform"
on Feb. 27. The primate will open for Truckadelic. which will be
celebrating the release of its new CD, Big in Mexico. You can bet
I'll be front and center, hitting the Gorilla up for that shot of Jack
he owes me...
SLIP IT IN: Daniel Day of local punks Exit 86 drops word that the
band has recently parted ways with their original guitarist. The
group — which sounds like its members' record collections never
got past Black Hag and Bad Religion — played its last show
with the surname-lacking six-stringer Michael (not the local
three-piece rock band) on Monday, Feb. 15 at Tasty World to the
delight of all four of their friends. Day explained that the split
was amicable and that guitar duties will now be performed by
Justin Wilkins.
LETS DISCUSS THIS ARTSY-FARTSY CRAP ONE MORE TIME:
Apparently inspired by our dual coverage of their electronic
efforts (Feb. 10), Robert Duckworth and The Noisettes' Brian
Horst will join their compositions in holy matrimony on Feb. 24,
upstairs at The Globe. Duckworth promises collaborations,
remixes, and special guests. As per what I always have to say
about these gigs, this concert should be fairly interesting, what
with Duckworth's peripheral interests in minutiae such as audi
ence seating arrangement and Horst's general misanthropy. The
show is free and starts at 9 p.m.
THE HUMOROUS AND SLOPPY NEED NOT APPLY: 5.7 Management
in Atlanta is currently seeking all sorts of "serious'* and "tal
ented" musical acts to add to its roster. According to its press
release, the company is interested in "bands knowledgeable in
the 'Artist/Manager' relationship." So if you know how to bend
over and say, "Thank you sir. may I have another." please feel free
to call the suits at (404) 521-0704.
WHERE TO GO AFTER YOU GET THROWN OUT OF TASTY WORLD: Day
By the River invites you and your drinkin' buddies out to The
One Love Music and Dance Hall on Feb. 27. The band is orga
nizing an gala event celebrating the release of Three Sets, a com
pilation disc from Lauan Records featuring three live, half-hour
sets from OBTR, Boston's Jiggle the Handle, and San Francisco's
Vinyl. Rock 103.7 will be broadcasting live from 8-10 p.m., and
the UGA organization Students for Environmental Awareness
will be handing out information about how to be more, urn,
aware about the environment. Local musician Nathan Sheppard
opens.
JUST IN CASE YOU CARE: Somewhere in Atlanta is a band named
13 Stories. Sure, whatever. I ain't ever heard of 'em either. But
that don't matter, 'cause their song, "Shake Your Ass," is going to
be featured in VHl's "Fashion Television." The tune will be played
in the background during a segment on the former Mrs. John
Cale, Betsey Johnson. Look for the show this weekend, and then
look for the members of 13 Stories to return to their day jobs,
eternally wondering why a song titled "Shake Your Ass" didn't
make them bigger stars.
I GOT LOCAL MUSIC NEWS COMING OUTTA MY ASS: Local musical
project Set On Edge recently began recording its third album at
Full Moon Studios with Tom Lewis. Lead Edger Shannon Lewis
says the new disc is tentatively titled Falling on Deaf Ears. In
other SOE news, an unnamed Michigan label is interested in
releasing a compilation of remastered songs from Lewis' previous
two CDs, Autumn Song and Sod Pottage, fer national distribution.
Another label, Ionic Records, has expressed interest in releasing
Falling on Deaf Ears, as well as a live disc to be recorded at a
forthcoming gig in April. More on this developing story as details
emerge...
Send news to theheckler@busta-rttymes.com or call 549-9523.
As always, drop-in chastising is gladly appreciated.
