Lite Is Beautiful (PG-13) This
remarkable Italian film is really two
short films |omed al the hip The first
half, set m 1939. follows a tovial Tuscan
named Guido (Roberto Bemgm. who
also wrote and directed) as he moves to
Arezzo and courts a lovely school
teacher (Benigm's wife, actress Nicoletla
Braschi) Anyone familiar with Benigm's
previous comic performances (Down By
Law, A Night On Earth. II Moslro) will
thoroughly enioy the sweet, albeit
lengthy opening hall of the film The
second movement, set in 1945. follows
the couple and their six-year-old son as
they're rounded up by the Nazis and
shipped off to a concentration camp
Guido makes up an elaborate story for
his son m which the Nazis are simply
the ‘mean guys who yefl a lot" and the
prisoners are participants who work for
points in hopes of winning the big prize
(a military tank) Scenes of Guido
clowning around in the camp lor the
sake ot protecting his son Irom the hor
rible reality ot Ihe situation are both
humorous and heartbreaking Il's an
awkward way to tell a story, but the
beautiful photography and excellent cast
help tag this as a must-see Italian with
English subtitles (Mall Outside)
