The West Seventies, a jangly
guitar-pop quartet from Ireland, will
play an early gig (7 p.m.) at the
Lunch Paper on College Square on
Friday and open for local group The
Music Tapes at the 40 Watt Club on
Saturday. The four Dubliners are on their way to the big SXSW showcase in Austin, Texas this
week, stopping in New York City, Athens and Atlanta along the way.
The Irish Times descnbed the band as a "Violent Femmes for the millennium," though the
vocal harmonies, Beatles-esque song structures and twisty romantic themes on the band's three-
song EP sound closer to XTC or Mitch Easter's work in Let's Active.
Catch the band at Eddie's Attic in Atlanta on Sunday or out in Austin at Maggie Mae's East on
Saturday, March 20 if you're making the trek out there. (BL)

Has it really been almost three years
since Cibo Matto released Viva! La Woman,
that sonic gumbo debut that melded the
Beastie Boys to Portishead, "The Frugal
Gourmet" to "Sesame Street"? With surreal
lyrics focusing on apples, beef jerky,
birthday cake, and chicken — surely you
remember "Know Your Chicken" — along
side a litany of musical patter that was
rhythmically infectious and melodically
grounded, Cibo Matto were destined to be
the darlings of the glossy magazine illumi
nate
After the newcomer hype surrounding
New Yorkers Miho Matori and Yuka Honda
wore off, the duo kept a decidedly low-key
profile, while remaining relatively busy. Ob° Matto
Honda produced current Cibo Matto bassist Sean Lennon's recent solo album, which featured a
duet with Hatori. Ms. Haton has recorded songs with Mitchell Froom (who produced Vivo!) as
well as with Arto Lindsay and Babes in Toyland's Kat Bjelland for the film Witchblode. The group
has also contributed songs to other movies such as Half Baked and Lover Girl, and is currently fin
ishing the follow-up to Vrva! La Woman, which should be available sometime soon. The band will
be heading to SXSW in Austin after this show, . j catch them now before they dump Lennon and
run off with fellow SXSW'ers Right Said Fred. (JB)
