BAND SPEAK
bv MATT THOMPSON
SOUTHERN BITCH
Adam Musick—vocals, guitar
Wendy Musick—guitar, vocals
Taylor Joiner—bass, vocals
Robb West—drums
the tattoo shops, and people who don't know
the band liked the name and just picked them
up, so the name's promoted itself more than
we've promoted it."
Why should someone come to
a Southern Bitch show?
"It's good, honest rock and
roll. I don't know... we give you
your money's worth. It's a hus
band and wife team, and it
actually works out easier, get
ting to be together."
Local band Southern Bitch hit something of
a snag late last year after building up a serious
head of steam in the Athens music scene. The
rhythm section (drummer Robb West and
bassist Paul Wlazlo of local band Dime Bag)
wasn’t able to hit the road with the band, and
while there's definitely no hard feelings,
headman Adam Musick and his wife Wendy put
the band on hiatus while he searched for a new
rhythm section.
The search is almost over, as Taylor Joiner of
Cafeteria (with whom Adam Musick plays pedal
steel) steps in to fill the bass position. The band
is still looking for a full-time drummer who can
travel. Southern Bitch will definitely be busy in
the next couple months, a single is ready for
release and a full-length album is planned for
spring. Adam Musick speaks:
Being a rock band with a bit
of twang, is the inevitable
"alternative country" tag a
help or a detriment, and does
it even fit?
"I would definitely say that's
true, because we do have
country influences and moun
tain music influences. It's not a detriment at all
because it's there. With the name, people imme
diately see it as 'Southern something,' so yeah. I
guess you could call it that."
Ever catch hell for the accent?
"Not so much in the South, but I lived in
Arizona for four months and I couldn't open my
mouth without catching hell. It does get
annoying sometimes."
What's ahead for the Y2K version of Southern
Bitch?
"More and more traveling, that's for sure.
We're not lettin' up. People ’..ant rock and roll
and country rock. I don't knew how it is on the
radio because I don't list-en to the radio, but the
club scene is hot."
Ever get any flack for the name?
"Just from my family, really. Most other
people I've talked to like it. We put stickers in
Southern Bitch and The Moonshine Killers play at
the Caledonia Lounge on Wednesday, February
16.
BAND WAY
3rooks Carter—vocals, guitar, bass, drums, key
boards
Bo Taylor—guitar, bass, drums, keyboards
What is Bandway all about? How is it dif
ferent from Jack'O'Nuts?
"It's just two dudes. Originally, we wanted to
w'rite songs about the Piedmont area up here;
reckin' the Piedmont is what
we re all about. AC/DC is a big
influence, and we're moving
tc./ards the 1984-era Van Halen
because we've gotten a keyboard.
We're re living all the great rock
and roll bands we grew up with
now that we re mature adults."
Considering Jack'O'Nuts' suc
cess, was it intimidating to
come back to Athens with
something so totally different?
"Not really. Maybe it was
back when we first came back,
but like I said there's much less
pressure now. It's the perfect
vehicle to come back. If it was
just another pop-rock band, it'd
be different."
Former Athens musician Brooks Carter is per
haps be<t .emembered as the guitarist and
vocalist in wildly experimental rock band
Jack'O'Nuts. After relocating to Raleigh, NC a few
years back, he and partner-in-crime Bo Taylor
turned away from art-rock, formed Bandway and
started playing songs about drugs, beer and rock
and roll with a boozy, nasty, boogie crunch.
Resembling the result of an all-night
drinking session betv/een AC/DC, Van Halen and
Timbuk 3, Bandway kicks out the jams with the
help of pre-recorded backing tracks and an
impish sense of humor.
Before Carter begins an internship at medicai
school, the band will record an album with David
Barbe tentatively titled Dickin' Around—a
follow-up to last year's hilarious debut album.
Balls Out. Brooks Carter speaks:
Is ii tough doing AC/DC-style rock and roll,
which is fairly organic, without a drummer?
"No, because we already got drums on tape.
It's almost easier because you don't have some
guy getting drunk and missing a beat. We're
more a musical partnership, like Timbuk 3."
How has the Athens music scene changed over
the years?
I have no idea; I'm so out of touch with it
anyway. I really can't say. The scene is less like
Timbuk 3 than it used to be, but we're more like
Timbuk 3 than we used to be."
Bandway plays at the Caledonia Lounge with Hai
Karate on Friday, February 18.
