Don Chambers,
Lizzie West
Flicker Theatre & Bar
Athens singer-songwriter Don
Cumbers spent much of recent
musical career in front of the local
trio Vaudeville, but is emerging as
one of the scene's more potent
solo acts. He specializes in a wry,
sullen brand of antiquated,
American music from the soul.
'I'm playif^ banjo and singing at these solo shows mostly these days,* says Chambers.
'Banjo and guitar and some a cappeila stuff. It is sort of slow-moving ami moody, but I usually
reference what I'm playing as old-time gospel and country music; Dock Boggs ami Roscoe
Holcomb kind of stuff. Real simple songs,'
’Vaudeville is currently writing material,' he adds. 'We've kind of wiped the slate clean and
started on a new adventure.'
Chambers recently completed recorded a dozen new songs at engineer Andy Baker's new home
studio. The as-of-yet-untitied collection should be out by mid-fall
Opening tonight's show is the New York-based singer-guitarist Lizzie West, a country-folk
artist who has been described as'if Marilyn Monroe were fttsy Cline' and 'the love child of Mae
West and Bob Dylan.' West is making her first trip down to Georgia behind an suttry, brooding
U-song collection titled Holy Road, Athens songsmith Vic Varney shared the stage with West
recently at The Fez in NYC, and reports great things. Music starts at B:30 p,m. CaU 546-0039 for

Maybe it's the long-term

grueling self-debat# (which isn't nearly as jmjch fun as it sounds), I've selected Empire $U?< as
my favorite band in Athens.
With its self-titled platter on Warm Records, Empire State has effectively overcome its bur-
densaare mantle as 'the band with the homemade Instruments * tes indeed, the dhc includes
yard sailing erperiroentatisffl to go 'round, (Witness "Dog faced Boy' and 'La la land/) Mere
remarkable, though, are Empire State's pop tunes, which go way beyond buffering its more eso
