When he was 12 or 13, guitarist Dodd FerreUe
had something of a sonic epiphany. After
hearing the guitar solo in Neil Young's
'Cinnamon Girl" and the second solo in Jimi
Hendrix's “All Along the Watch tower," FerreUe
knew he wanted to play guitar. By 16, he was
playing guitar in various bands and later writing
his own tunes. Relocating to Athens from
Savannah, Feneile hooked up with The Rags, a
coUection of musicians from Redneck GReece
Delux and the Star Room Boys. FerreUe left the
Rags three years ago to per sue his own vision of
roots rock, which he calls “sonic Americana."
drawing inspiration from Steve Earle, Paul
Westeiberg, Mike Scott and The Beatles.
Kis latest coUection of musicians. The Tinfoil
Stars, got together about six months ago
FerreUe and guitarist Tim Adams had been
talking about working together for a while, and
Adams brought along wife Michelle McLure on
bass. Feneile and company ran into former Pylon
drummer Curtis Crowe at the 40 Watt and con
vinced him to dust off his drumkit dadqpot City
fiddler Mamie Fike joins the group when she's
able, as well.
The group is currently polishing up songs
from Ferrelle's soon-to-be released album. Strung
Out Like The Lights at Christmastime. A tune
from the David Barbe-engi-
neered album, recently won a
BMI songwriter's award up in
Nashville. Feneile speaks:
What dots "roots rod" mean
to you?
“It's a combination of folk,
rock and roll and maybe a bit of
country and blues. That's kind
of a boring way to describe it,
but it's easier than saying 50
words you can never remember.
Each time you describe it, it's
something different."
Is it difficult being the
frontman in a "self-named
band with backing group* a la Tom Petty and
the Hearthreakers?
“I don't really care for having my name up
there, but I don't really think about it too much.
It's just a way to let people know what Fm up to.
This is completely a group thing, and the band
has done a great job with the songs I wrote. I
consider myself a member of the band: I'm just
up front and singing is all."

The Dictatortots are a bit odd. They mix
Mot or head's metallic crunch with Weeris off-the-
wall silliness along with such varied influences
as Dennis Miller, “The Simpsons," pro wrestling,
Internet pom and the Clayton Street Deli On
Broad Street. Oh, yeah, and PBR, you can't
forget that.
"We all wanted to get drunk,
and wa had enough money for a
case of PBR, so we got drunk and
started to play music, very
badly, which we do to this day."
says vocalist MC Hatchet, who
bears an eerie resemblance to PWF
wrestler Deacon Hatchet. "If
anyone says we're doing anything
artistic with this, I wanna chal
lenge that guy to a cage match or
maybe a barb-wire match."
The band's musk i* faitly
entertaining arid off-titter, but it's
the live shows that sell the band.
At their tint gig, deejay Willie
Sklx cooked up eight pounds of
tales tot* for the crowd, and at
the second show Hatchet accidentally head
butted guitarist Snake's {*» Sear's) guitar neck
and lost a good deal of blood from the gash. The
band afc* has an album, Apoctdyptic Wind

"Snake {or Bear) sings most of the sensitive
tunes. Actually, if we go to a bar and get free
beer or liquor, that would be good enough for
me. We just like to get drunk, and I like to
watch wrestling, and we like to play music.
What are the live shows like?
“Dangerous and nutritional. We'll have tater
tots, beef jerky, and I think well be giving away
some free ninjas the next time."
So how do people react to these..."perfor
mances"?
"I think they're happy about getting free
food, but I don't know what people think about
the music. They're effhei confused or offended,
and being the heel 1 am, I appreciate that
greatly,*
