Larry Garner & The
Boogaloo Blues Band
One Love Music & Dance Hall
Baton Rouge blues guitarist Larry Garner-
born in 1952 in New Orleans and reared in
Baton Rouge—grew up on a steady diet of
great rhythm and blues music from the likes of
Silas Hogan, Clarence Edwards and others.
Rooted in the swamp blues tradition indigenous
to his Baton Rouge environs, Garner learned
how to play guitar from his uncle and a couple
of gospel-playing elders.
After completing his military service in
Korea, he returned to Baton Rouge and
embarked on a part-time musical career while working at a chemical plant for almost two
decades. He recently retired.
The British JSP label released Gamer's first two albums in the early '90s, but it wasn't until
the release of You Need To U,~ A Little (Verve) where Garner delivers creative originals detailing
the difficulty of keeping "Four Cats Running" and the universal pain of suffering through
"Another Bad Day," that he became poised for 21st-Century blues stardom. The brand r.ew album,
Once Upon the Blues (Ruf), features songs by two Louisiana musicians, Clarence "Gatemouth"
Brown's "Drifter" and Henry Gray's "Cold Chills."
Expect a steamin' set filled with exquisite fret and finger work on the guitar, some smooth,
funky vocal work and a few pop-flavored stompers from Garner and his band. (BL)

Groove
Collective
Theatre
The party-based, acid-jazz
outfit Groove Collective is a
pioneer of contemporary
groove music. Flutist Richard
Woith, DJ Smash and rapper
Nappy G—all three staples of
a nomadic dance club called
Giant Step—formed in down
town New York City in 1990 and gradually expanded the combo into a full ten-piece ensemble
with keyboardist Itaal Shur, drummer Genji Siraisi and bassist Jonathan Maron. The band estab
lished itself with a brand of funk inspired by Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind And Fire, Parliament -
Funkadelic, Sly Stone and elements of acid-jazz, drum'n'bass, hip-hop and salsa.
Vibraphonist Bill Ware—known for his work with Steely Dan—soon signed on along with sax
ophonist Jay Rodriguez, trombonist Josh Roseman, trumpeter Fabio Morgera and percussionist
Chris Theberge.
Groove Collective's self-titled debut album appeared on Reprise in 1993, followed by 1996's
We The People (GRP),1998's Dance Of The Drunken Master (Shanachie) and 1999's Declassified
(Shanachie).
"Life's a bitch 'til you find your niche; now I'm finding mine in my rhyme," says Nappy G on
the recent album's "On A Feeling"—one of the smoother tracks on the uninhibited 14-song col
lection.
The local funk-loving Jomo Entertainment folks are totally behind this evening gig, so be
warned. (BL)
