to blow the crowd plumb out the door
with a raucous two-hour set, playing
plenty ol old favorites and a large
number of new ones The guys con
sumed quite a bit of differing types of
liquor, but it didn't slow them down one
whit. If anything, 't made the Truckadelic
assault all that nastier The band even
did a high-octane version of the
‘Grease’ favorite. ‘You're the One That I
Want,’ despite a number of much-
ne^^ bathroom breaks by the band
However, the most touching moment of
the night, and possibly the whole event,
was when hall the crowd, including
Greg Smalley's mom. joined Truckadelic
on-stage for a rousing rendition o'
Smalley's classic ‘She's Breaking My
Heart {While I'm Drinking Her Beer).’
‘Creepy’ Kenny Howes did the old ‘play
the guitar behind the head’ trick, and
Truckadelic slew the crowd, closing with
scorching versions of ‘Jesus Has Call
Waiting’ and ‘Truckin' Lovin' Mari." It
was amazing, and the crowd left
Saturday night happy, drunk and
preparing for one helluva hangover
Sunday morning. Stumbling into the
Star Bar in the late Sunday afternoon
h&Lti with a wicked, third-degree hang
over. the firs! thing your faithful reporter
dards. including a bam-buming rendi
tion of ‘Buttholevilie’ featuring Jim
Stacy on some nasty harmonica, and
plenty of new songs of the upcoming
‘redneck rock opera ’ For the newer
songs. Uuadrajets bassist John ‘Pudd’
joined the Truckers, and of course, the
band played its tribute to Greg Smalley,
the incredibly affecting ‘The Living
Bubba ‘ Before closing with the concert
favorite ‘Steve McQueen.’ the band was
joined on-stage by ol' Rodney tor Van
Halen’s ‘Ain't Talkin' About Love." Now,
I don't dig on Van Halen in any ol their
incarnations, but what the hell... it was
fun. As he has for the past seven years,
the inestimable Redneck GReece closed
the B2K festivities with his twisted take
on swingin' hillbilly honky tonk. Joined
by a cast of all-stars, including ‘The
Virginia Ki(T Adam Mustek of the excel
lent country-rock outfit Southern Bitch.
Redneck poured his sequin-covered
heart into the music, including the
‘Elvira’ parody "Viagra.’ a touching
rendition of Smalley's ‘She's Breaking
My Heart (While I'm Drinking Her
Beer),’ and a rousing closer of
Haggard’s ‘Honky-Tonk Night-Time
Man.’ Unfortunately, my memory of the
set is completely shot, and my notes are
did was retire to the downstairs Vinyl
Lounge to lick his wounds and fortify
himself with some cold whiskey. I made
it back upstairs to catch the pride of
Baltimore, the Glenmont Popes.
Actually, it was really just Popes
madman Rodney Henry backed through
a truly weird set of circumstances by a
trio of those wild boys, the Drive-By
Truckers. Guitarist Mike Cooley, bassist
Rob Malone and drummer Brad Morgan
lent their considerable talents quite
handily to Henry's whiskey-bent-and-
hell-bound form ol rock and roll, and
once again ol' Rodney looked like he
was having the time of his rowdy life,
particularly on tunes like ‘Ted Nugent
Condominium * I asked Rodney just
what said condominium was. but for
give me. the answer was washed away
by the booze A slight reprieve came in
the form of The Judge and the Jury, a
Savannah-based straight country outfit.
As pleasing as the band was. the show
was made better by the addition of steel
guitarist John Neff of the Star Room
Boys. II anyone can play a steel guitar,
y'all. that boy can flat hang it in The
band did a number of covers, as well,
including a nugget from pe.sonal
favorite Gene Watson. ‘Fourteen Karat
Mind,* and closed with ‘Surrender’ by
that classic country band Cheap Trick
New York’s country cock-rock trio the
Ex-Husbands hit the stage and played
their standard energy-packed show,
complete with their own high-octane
originals and a rousing show-closer of
ACNDC's ‘Beatin’ Around the Bush ’
However, the drummer came out nekkid
as a jaybird, with only a small, red
plastic cowboy hat covering his little
pardnec I did not need to see that.
Thankfully, the Drive-By Truckers were
up next to cleanse the crowd and blow
the goddamn doors off the joint The
Truckers have been doing some heavy
duty roadwork as of late, but if they felt
any wear and tear, they didn’t show it.
The band roared through a set of stan-
total gibberish. Someone must've
slipped something in my drink, I reckon
In any event, Bubbapalooza was one
hellacious shindig and the most fun I've
had standing up (for the most part) in
weeks Times may change and trends
may shift, but the Redneck Underground
remain strong. One would think that
somewhere in honky-tonk heaven, ol'
Greg Smalley has a big grin on his face
I know I did, despite the near-death
hangover Monday morning.

CAFETERIA
June 15,2000
Flicker Theatre
II seems that every time I see
Cafeteria play the lineup is different, and
there’s some kind of challenge to over
come. At Ihe last show, the peddle steel
player was doped up on pain killers
from just having his wisdom teeth
pulled that day. On this occasion, the
drummer was performing with a broken
leg
The Cafeteria concert at Flicker
included six players with a couple of
special guests. Most songs had the pre
lude. ‘Alright guys, the chords in this
one are..The bass player and female
back-up vocalist were new to me and
the drummer looked different, too. There
were no microphones, so the show was
largely acoustic.
Vocalist-guitarist Taylor Joiner
belled out country drawl lines like,
‘There ain't no such thing as a free
lunch ’ The bartender wilh his Joe
Cocker body movements and some
longhair sat in for a couple ol songs,
adding their flavor to the set.
Somehow Cafeteria survived the
recent personnel changes and bodily
injuries to successfully improvise their
way through another good live perfor
mance.
