BATTLEFIELD EARTH (PG-13) John
Travolta hammers a few nails into the
coffin holding his career with his awful
performance in this truly wretched sci-fi
adventure flick about a race of evil alien
creatures who report back to ‘home
office’ for executive orders while trying
to exterminate humans. With Barry
Fepper and Forest Whitaker. This is one
of the dumbest and ugliest sci-fi films of
the last few years. Based on the novel by
Scientology leader L. Ron Hubbard.

BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE (PG-13)
Martin Lawrence goes ’deep under
cover* in this crude comedy about a
slick city detective who poses as an
obese Georgia grandmother. As ‘Big
Momma,’ he kicks ass in karate class,
slam dunks on the basketball court,
boogies hard in church and delivers a
baby with unconventional methods
This is a derivative comedy consisting
of little more than a continuous string of
gags and one-liners revolving around
the same joke, but audiences are
howling anyway. (Beechwood, Carmike.
Commerce Drive-In)
BOL:: ROOM (R) This aggressive,
well-paced drama frem wnter-director
Ben Younger examines the current era
ot greed and the horrible "new yuppie’
with great results. Seth Davis (Giovanni
Ribisi) is a nervous and ambitious New
Yorker living in the shadow of his gruff
father (Ron Rifkin). When he goes to
work for a Long Island brokerage, he
stumbles into an unethical, sink-or-
swim world concerned only with the
bottom line. His fight for respect from
his father and colleagues—and his
struggle with his conscience—is
engaging, authentic and intense. (Mall)
CHICKEN RUN (G) Some of the most
fascinating “kid’s movies’ tap into the
imagination of both children and adults
by use of humor and drama and this off
beat. whimsical Claymation action-
adventure certainly does with great
results. Set in England in 1950s, the
story follows a pack chickens uesperate
to escape from the prison camp-like
Tweedy’s Farm. Ginger (voiced by Julia
Siwalha). dreams of escaping but is
caugnt at every attempt and tossed into
solitary confinement. Then, Rocky the
Flying Rooster (voiced by Mel Gibson),
a cocky American bird, cones bouncing
into the yard and claims he can leach
the hens how to flv to freedom. It's weird
excitement packed with dry British
humor and slang, some frightening
close-calls and a genuine sense of
drama and urgency. Go see it.

DISNEY'S THE KID (PG) Bruce Willis
gets to meet himself as an 8-year-old
kid in this family comedy from director

FANTASIA 2000 (G) Walt Disney's
spectacular animated feature introduces
seven new sequences set to the music
of the master composers and spotlights
the return of ‘The Sorcerer's
Apprentice’—a milestone piece of ani
mation which was the centerpiece of the
1940 feature. Highlights include
’Rhapsody In Blue,* which pays
homage to the music o! George
Gershwin and the New York-ish style of
legendary caricaturist Al Hirschfeld: and
‘Pines Of Rome’ featuring music by
Ottorino Respighi and a beautiful depic
tion of a herd of humpback whales
flying through glaciers, oceans and
clouds by artist-directors Dean Gordon
and William Perkins. Highly recom
mended. (Beechwood, Carmike)

Pampelmusenmoncf), a 1989 German
film directed by Joachim Masannek.

amusing slacker comedy (’It tanked!"

suburban high-schoo! friends who. after

friends on the same day. waste time at
the local mall by hanging with typically
Smith-esque characters. Jay and Silent

ME. MYSELF & IRENE (PG-13) Jim
Carrey suffers an extreme'y weird split
personality disorder in this vulgar
comedy from the Farrelly Brothers
(There's Something About Wary). The
comedian is Charlie, a nice-guy cop
living in Rhode Island in a town where
everybody—except for his three special
sona—constantly walks all over him.
He’s the joke of the town .. until one
day when he totally loses it and
becomes 'Hank,' a corr.pfefeJy unlik-
able, overly aggressive, sexist menace.
The opening 15 minutes of this thing
are packed with ridiculously offensive
jokes that get big laughs, but things
quickly get shaky as Chart le/H^nk’s love
interest (played blandly by Jerry
Maguires Renee Zellweger) drags
him/them on a confusing and bumpy
adventure. Like Mary and Kingpin
before, the story basically follows its
characters along a wild road trip filled
with setups, punchlines and pratfalls. It
doesn't work so well this time, unfortu
nately. There is too much gratuitous
“gross-out’ and not enough heart.
While must fans of the Farrelly brand of
crudeness will find plenty here to yell
about, others will be thoroughly disap
pointed. With Chris Cooper, Robert
Forster, Richard Jenkins and Little Tony
Cox. (Beechwood, Carmike)
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2 (PG-13)
Action master John Woo’s (Face/Off)
sequel to Brian DePalma’s 1996 fancy
action-thriller is about as exciting as a
soft dnnk advertisement. White “vaca
tioning* off the sides of cliffs, agent
Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) receives word
on his next assignment and takes off to
Spam to locate sexy jewel thief Nyah
(Thandie Newton) They fall in love after

fight scenes, shoot-outs and car chases
ensue. Each action scene is peppered
by Woo's obsessions with slow-motion.
broken glass and birds, but the plot and
script completely crumble into total
nonsense. With Vino Rhames, John
Folson, Richard Roxburgh and Brendan
Gleeron. (Beechwood, Carmike)

Green “na r rates." Partially filmed on the
