Set in England in the 1950s. this off-beat, whimsical Claymation action-adventure loilows a pack chickens desperate to escape from the prison camp-like Tweedy's Farm Ginger (voiced by Julia Sawalha). dreams of escaping but is caught a: every attempt and tossed into solitary confinement. Then. Rocky the Flying Rooster (voiced by Mel Gibson), a cocky American bird, comes bouncing into the yard and claims he can. teach the hens how to fly to freedom It's weird excitement packed with dry British humor and slang, some frightening close-calls and a genome sense of drama ana urgency Go see it (Beechwood, Carmike) DISNEY’S THE KID (PGj Director John Turteltaub's (Phenomenon, family comedy is a warm, clever, and senti mental offering that gets syrupy (thanks especially to the obnoxious musical cues), but stays on track. Bruce Willis is an arrogant L.A image consultant who. on the eve of his 40th birthday, gets to meet himself as an 8-year-old kid He dismisses fhe phenomenon as an oncoming nervous breakdown The pudgy kid, played with convincing charm and wit by newcomer Spencer Breslm. can’t understand why he's been transplanted to his future, either. Mel Gibsons effective performance as a South Carolina farmer who resists the call to arms propels the film, but some scenes are so poorly written, itls hard not to laugh. Das Boot) from Sebastian Junger s best selling book (based on true events). Drenched in sea water, fish guts, a relentless score of overly-dramatic sym phonic music and a few magnificent performances, the epic follows a group of grizzled Massachusetts fishermen aboard the boat Andrea Gail as they attempt to haul m the motherload catch during a monstrous “storm of the cen tury." The story set in the fishing town of Gloucester in 1991. gradually intro duces a handful of characters struggling to make life work, be it on the sea or on land As the boats serious-minded, determined skipper, George Clooney clocks m a strong performance, con veying a complicated blend of heroism, romanticism, greed and desperation. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (Umbo). Mark Wahlberg. Diane Lane. William Fichtner and John C. Reilly deliver some fine support performances as well Unfortunately, much of what should have been climactic moments in the final acts gets bogged by the choppy story and drawn-out storm scenes pro pelled by special effects.
