full pirate garb plus hat—even invisible, he felt
awkward going naked) arrived on my front porch
around 3:46 a.m. to claim his revenge.

The leprosy epidemic among Athens bands has
recently struck Thumb Attack (now short a
bassist) and the Grateful Dead tribute band
Cosmic Charlie (f/k/a One More Saturday Night),
now auditioning drummers and bassists familiar
with the Dead catalogue. Contact cosmiccha-

jRays Thursday, August 3 at the Georgia Theatre.
Meanwhile, American Mutts and Wunderkind
have closed up shop for good.
Local pianist Kit Holmes has
lined up a series of jazz

to 2 p.m. and every Sunday
from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
into the foreseeable future,
providing a soothing sound
track to watching the
pachysandra grow.
Athens producer/gallery

Local power-poppers (which sounds more and
more like the name for a cheap firecracker and less
like a musical classification every time I see it)
The Modfathers are gearing up to record their
full-leogtn debut with producer Dave Barbe (you
know. Sugar, Mercyland, Buzz Hungry... that Dave
Barbe) at Chase Park Transduction studios during
the month of August. All the songs are written, all
systems are go. One minor snag, tho': they're
short a bassist. If you'd like to become a
Modfdther/Modmother and you're into classic
guitar pop (The Kinks, The Stones, The Zombies,
Superdrag, 20/20, etc.) give Seth Hall and/or
Dee Porter a call at 543-9522. This doesn't entail
a permanent commitment to stay with the band
after recording or perform live, just to iearn a few
songs in July, record them in August, have fun

Punk rockers Exit 86 and Kill The Man Who

WUGA-FM, our local limousine-liberal NPR affil

Normaltown Flyers, Gregg Allman, Sea Level,
everyone else and their cousins over the course of
their careers.

has prepared the third
album from his side-pro

usual, most of his OM

to a persistent rumor
around town. The Olivia
Tremor Control has not
cashed in its chips,
although Bill Doss is
taking some time off to rear his new baby The
Sunshine Fix. On the other hand, you've gotta
wonder about Neutral Milk Hotel.
A few luminaries of the Athens breakbeat/jungle/

Local poet/publisher (I dunno, "wordsmith" just
sounds so fucking pretentious) David Oates is
holding the next Athens Poetry Slam And Open
Mic downstairs at Blue Sky Coffee on Thursday,
July 20. There's a "suggested donation" of S3, and
slam winners may be eligible to compete in the
Southwest Slam Regional Competition this
summer. Call Oates at 546-7797 for the details,
and remind him that, two years ago, I sent him
two of the best short stories I've ever written on
disk, with a self-addressed stamped envelope, and
never heard a peep out of him. (Maybe I need to
polish up my oh-so-subtle vagina allusions and
mocha references.) You know what they say: the
average "poet" is someone who desperately wants
to be known as a "writer" but gets tripped up by
complete sentences. If you feel like proving other
wise, g’ve Oates a call
and don't take silence
for an answer.
Local trio Sight Unseen got its new CD Power Play
back from l he factory a little earlier than antici

Artisan entertainment plans to release The
