LOST & FOUNDRY
Onward And Upward
IN THE BAG (From the Athens-Clarke County Animal Control weekly press release): "On July 25th, Athens-Clarke County Animal Control
Officers responded to a call on North Homewood Drive. The caller stated a cai got its head stuck in a Doritos bag, knocked over a birdbath
soaking itself, crashed into a wall, and was paralyzed or dead. Upon arrival, officers found the soaking wet cat with its head still in the bag
eating Doritos. Officers removed the bag from its head and released the uninjured cat."
ON THE AIR (From a press release by Dr. Thump): "Local author and adventurer Gordon Lee Stelter (better known as 'Lee Gordon' and 'Dr.
Thump'—the guy who plays ragtime piano out of the back of a truck), will have a story from his memoirs. Adventures With God: Or Con Men,
Cannibals and Psychopaths, and How to Avoid Them read as part of National Public Radio's 'Story Project' during 'All Things Considered' at 5
p.m. Saturday, August 5 (WUGA 91.7 FM). In 1977, one week after Elvis died, I received a call from "The Tonight Show," to appear as a
singer. Instead, I abandoned all my property and went on a 10-year, penniless tour of religious communities. Some amazing things hap
pened, and I have put them into a book.' When asked what brought him to Athens, Thump replied, 1 was thrown out of a monastery in
Florida for singing show tunes in the kitchen. The head monk barked, "If you like music so much, why don't you gc to Athens with all the
other musicians.'" The manuscript, which attracted much attention at the recent Harriet Austin Writers Conference, is cuirently making the
rounds of New York publishing houses and Hollywood."
WHAT IF... Think of all that we suffer during the summer so that students and football fans won't be inconvenienced by street construction
during the fall. Maybe if, instead of cramming all that digging into the summer, they strung it out into the autumn, football fans would walk
from campus to downtown to eat and drink and students would learn not to park downtown during class hours and... oh forget it.
