Tuesday, August 15 "One Hit Wonder Night" Caledonia Lounge Well, it had to happen sooner or later, the creative, imaginative mind of Athens- based music aficionado and event organizer Jen Jordan was bound to follow the recent suc cesses of tribute nights to Tom Petty and The Kinks with some- thing really big and weird. Meghann Jordan and Dave Man "Bob Fernandez [of the Star Room Boys] and I were just sitting in the 283 Bar one night and we were just thinking about all these songs we hadn't heard in a million years," remem bers Jordan. "We thought, 'wouldn't it be fun if we got a bunch of our friends to play all these stupid songs live on-stage.' It just popped into my head as a fun, different thing to do. And everyone would know most of the songs." This evening's event features live performances from six Athens bands including Ceiling Fan, The Star Room Boys, Johnny Carcinogen, Urban Henry, Slapfight (featuring guitarist Meghann Jordan) and Hayride. Tuesday, August 15 Junior Brown Georgia Theatre After recent decades titled with guitar gods—from Jimi Hendrix to Eddie Van Halen to Albert Lee—one would think . the six-string has been pushed as far as it could go. That was until Junior Brown came in swingin' and slingin'. This Kirksville, Indiana native is one the true innova tors of guitar picking in the last few years, not only with his fleet-fingered Diend of honky-tonk and surf music, but also with his trademark axe the "guit-steel." An oddball hybrid of an electric guitar and lap steel the instrument allows the transplanted Texan tc slip easily between lightning guitar runs and sweet sounding steel licks. Add in his Ernest Tubb-influenced vocals, a knack for writing top-notch honky-tonk numbers and a solid-as-a-rock backing band, and it's pure hillbilly heaven. Honing his chops through the '70s, Brown became an instructor at country legend Hank Thompson's School of Country Music in Oklahoma and fell under the tutelage of former Bob Wills steel player Leon McAuliffe. Around the same time, the "guit-steel" came to him in a dream, and the firsi version, " 0T Yellow," came into this world in 1985. Brown relocated to Austin in the late-'80s and released his first record, 12 Shades of Brown, on Curb in 1989. His 1993 disc, Guit With It, which featured his new version of the "guit-steel," broke him into the burgeoning alt-country limelight. 1998's Long Walk Bock is perhaps his strongest effort to date.
