Thursday, August 17 Park Bench Blues Band Georgia Theatre The Athens-based Park Bench Blues Band officiallyformed in January of 1999 out of the mem bers' common love for electric blues, classic rock, and vintage R&B. One year ago, PBBB was cranking out loose jams inspired by the Allmans, the Dead and Cream; these days, the band is a super-tight unit with an inventive and dexterous improvisational sound. Bassist Stephen Simmons and guitarist Greg Ward—who both played for years in rock bands in their native town of Savannah—relocated to the Classic City two years ago and hooked up with vocalist Julia Schoenning (who had previously performed as an acoustic solo artist), tall- standing drummer Rick Williams, budding zymurgist and keyboardist Mark Boohaker and guitarist Nick Worley. The sextet immediately started gigging around the smaller venues in town and quickly became one of the local scene's bigger draws (the band was chosen by popular vote as “Best Blues Band" at this year's Flagpole Athens Music Awards). Schoenning drew attention for a sultry voice and demeanor resembling the more soulful side of Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks and Bonnie Raitt. The band established itself as a versatile combo capable of mixing genres, handling time changes and adapting to its audiences. The Park Bench Blues Band is currently operating as a quintet as guitarist Nick Worley has exited the group to concentrate on other projects. Look for a studio recording to be released this fall and a slew of brand new tunes at this week's show. (BL) Featuring the rhythmic talents ol Cane Stanley. Friends since the age of eight, Hutchens and Carter dedicated themselves to songwriting, and by the early- '90s had compiled a repertoire of over 300 songs. Bloodkin's first album, 1994's rockin' Good Luck Charm, was followed by 1996's Creeperweed, which showcased the acoustic side of the band's sound. In 1999, local engineer David Barbe pro duced Out Of State Plates, a mean, guitar-laden album. On the record, local talents performed with the band, but the real stars are the songs themselves. It includes some old tunes like "Who Do You Belong To," "Yeah," and even the first song that Hutchens and Carter wrote together, "Wet Trombone Blues." Also featured are recent compositions "Taboo" and "Tennessee Williams." Bloodkin's current lineup includes Paul "Crurnpy" Edwards on bass and Bentley Rhodes on drums. You may recognize Edwards from his days in The Landsharks and White Buffalo or current Athens collaboration Barbara Cue. Rhodes' previous work was with Athens bands In Like Flynn and King Daddy Zeb. These additions are good for the live Bloodkin sound, which is usually gritty, mature and aggressive. Bloodkin plans to record its first live album on Friday, September 1 at Smith's Olde Bar in Atlanta. Also on the horizon is the release of the next studio album (also produced by Barbe) sometime in the Spring. Hutchens says we can expect it to be the "weirdest Bloodkin album yet" with songs about "temptation and salvation and birth and death and cornbread." It will be a night full of Athens veterans as the Randall Bramblett Band opens.
