Dog Days
TRIBUTE He was a journalist and a gentleman of the old school, hanging around the office even when it was closed; always on the prowl for
the opposite sex, food, drink wherever his nose led him. Brown Dog was the hardworking, hard-playing night watchman and mascot of the
Oglethorpe Echo down in Lexington. Like a good newsman he knew the whole town (and
its dogs) and the whole town knew him. He slept outside the Echo office, except in the
bitterest cold weather, when he would stay inside for the night. Once, a look-alike dog
was killed by a car, and Echo Publisher Ralph Maxwell sadly had him buried in his back
yard, only to find Brown Dog on the job as usual at the office Monday morning. This
time, alas, the news of his death is true: old age and infirmity having stopped his
rounds at last. Cactus is in the Echo office now, taking over the role of newr-hound so
nobly filled by Brown Dog and by Offset for 17 years before him.
MODEST PROPOSAL It's true that it's easier to want green space when your own land is
not involved. Why don't we put our money where our mouths are? How about another
$200,000 million SPL0ST project to fund the purchase of land out in the greenbelt as it
becomes available? That should be enough to insure a protective chunk of greenbelt,
and it would compensate those whose land out there is their retirement nest egg. The land could be sold back to people willing to build one
house per 10 acres, and some of it could be set aside for public open spaces. The SPL0ST fund would have to be approved by the voters,
who could agree to tax themselves to provide for the greenbelt. Is it legal? Do I look like the County Attorney?
