WHAT IS FLAGPOLE, ANYWAY?
AUGUST 16, 2000 FLAGPOLE B
If you just got to Athens or just got
around to picking up a Flagpole, you may
want to know what this thing is and why it is
called "Flagpole" and not The Athens Weekly
Dispatch or something more newspaperly.
Since you're already looking at it, notice
that starting about the middle. Flagpole says
a lot about the "Athens music scene." That's
because there's a lot of music going on, and
we try to cover it, at least to the extent of
telling you who's playing where and when in
the ABC section and lift out a few highlights
every week to whet your appetite. We also
include some locally written record reviews
and live show reviews, in case you
haven't yet heard the album or you
missed the show.
Flagpole, in fact, got its start
14 years ago as a music maga
zine which called itself "The
Color Bearer Of The Athens
Music Scene." Hence "Flagpole."
Nowadays, even though we
include a lot more in addition to
music, we wouldn't think of changing
the name.
Speaking of "a lot more," if you'll flip back
to the front of Flagpole, you'll see that we've
got pages of news and comment, including a
lively Letters section where people let fly at
all kinds of targets, including Flagpole. In our
news and politics, we try to hone in on issues
that are important to Athens and the way we
live here. These issues can look pretty dull
until you realize what an impact they can
have on our community and on our own lives.
If you'll fiio forward a few pages, you'll
find our complete movie listings: what times
what films are playing at what theaters. In
addition, the Movie
Dope tells you a little
bit about each one
and a lot about the
Movie Pick each week.
Turn the page, and
you're Out There! in
our comprehensive
calendar listings. We
try to make Out
There! the place to
look if you want to
know what's hap
pening in Athens
and at UGA.
Toward the back
of Flagpole you'll
find our classified
ads, which are the
place to look if
you need to rent
or sell a house,
find an apartment
or a roommate,
buy or sell a car or find a bass player.
Flagpole is boosting circulation to 20,000
papers available at over 250 locations in
Athens-Clarke, the University of Georgia
campus and Watkinsville, so they'll be easier
than ever to find.
That brings up a good question: how can
we afford to distribute Flagpole for free? Why
don't we charge 50 cents for it like the big
guys? The answer is simple: by making it free
we can have a larger circulation—much
larger, in fact, than the big guys here in
Athens-Clarke County. That means more
people see our paper, and that means our
advertisers get a good result for the money
they spend with us for advertising.
Advertising is, in fact, the engine that drives
newspapers, and even those that charge you
50 cents rely for their main income on their
advertising. We forego the 50 cents, put more
papers on the streets, get a better result for
our advertisers and it all comes out in the
wash.
Speaking of advertising, as you have
turned through Flagpole you have no doubt
noticed how much the ads are an integral
part of the look of the paper. Our ads are
generally handmade to the specifications of
our advertisers. The ads are built by
artists who design them to fit
within the visual format of
Flagpole, so that they call
attention to cur advertisers
and enhance the overall look
of the paper.
Who does all this, you might
ask? We have a small, full-time
staff of talented, experienced
people who are goc d (and fast) at
what they do. We also rely on a large group of
freelance writers and photographers for a lot
of the weekly stories and pictuies. If you'll
look in the staff box on page three, most of
the writers listed there are freelancers: stu
dents, video store employees, waitstaff, musi
cians, lawyers or all of the above. Don't be
fooled by the cool, knowing attitude we try
to project. Inside Flagpole, we are eager fo;
new writers on all subjects, lust give us a call
or an email, and we'll put you to woik so fast
it will make your CD skip. We even pay.
Perhaps you haven't been Dipping through
Flagpole at all but have been reading it on
our web site, Dagpole.com. If so, you're one
of the growing
number of people
in Athens and
elsewhere who are
accustomed to
reading Flagpole
on-line. If you're
one of these, you'll
notice pretty soon
that we’re making
some improvements
to the web site to
make it more infor
mative and easier to
use.
In addition f o
Flagpole on-line and
off, we publish The
Flagpole Guide To
Athens every year,
and the new 2000-
2001 edition has just
hit the streets. The
Guide should be your
constant companion as you make your way
through the Athens year. It's got a detailed
restaurant and bar directory that tells you
where to go for what you want, and the Guide
is chock full of other interesting information
about what to do and where to go in the
Athens area and on campus. Get one now at
most locations where Flagpole is distributed.
If you lose it, you can always find another,
because we keep the distribution locations
stocked with Guides all year long.
Thanks for reading Flagpole and the Guide.
