LOST & FOUNDRY
The News Depends On You...
NOT SO FAST The punditry in this space last week was rather half-baked in its dismissal of the candidacy of Republican Jim Smith for
District Attorney. A local lawyer put the race into better perspective by pointing out that Smith does indeed have a shot at winning the race
for the following reasons. Local lawyers are still almost unanimous in their dread of Ken Mauldin becoming D.A. Presumably Smith could get
a large percentage of whatever vote the legal community will turn out. At the same time, Ken Mauldin may have benefited in the Democratic
Primary from an anti-Harry Gordon vote as well as the general and overwhelming anti-incumbent vote. The November Ge eral Election,
because of the Presidential election, will undoubtedly turn out a heavy Republican vote. Smith has been practicing law for a long time here
and has a wide pool of clients and their families. In addition, Mauldin won by a slim margin in the primary. It all adds up to the possibility
that Jim Smith is a serious candidate for District Attorney not to be dismissed by distracted pundits.
SICKENING Mayor Doc Eldridge's appearance on the Barbara Dooley radio show allowed the hostess to rail against "a small group of people"
who feel "they have come into power," and who think they can tell every Eckerd and Wal-Mart what they can and can't do here. Dooley said
she was "sickened" by the failure of Wal-Mart to build a Supercenter on the west side, on land bordering residential neighborhoods.
Yes, Barbara. How dare a group of taxpaying citizens stand up against a multi-national mega-corporation whose late founder bragged aDout
moving into small towns and raping their economies by grinding locally owned businesses under. How dare they demand that their own gov
ernment adhere to its land use plan by denying Wal-Mart's rezoning request.
Just think, we could have had another butt-ugly building and more cars clogging residential streets (and residents' lungs) to make their way
to it. And more of our local dollars could have really fattened things up out there in Bentonville, Arkansas. What's the quality of life in this
town worth anyway? Is it more or less than sales tax revenue? (Brad Aaron)
