"SHORT ATTENTION SPAN FILM AND VIDEO
FESTIVAL" ^NR) The big news: the diligent film
enthusiasts of the internationally-based Short
Attention Span Film And Video Festival will pre
sent in Athens this week a special "very best of"
installment culled from the competitive annual
programs. The big, big news is that the same
folks will launch their long-awaited Dreamspan
Network—an "online entertainment network
featuring top quality programming to audiences
around the world"—on the web at
dreamspan.com this week!
For the last nine year., the SASFVF has cele
brated the most abbreviated of film works culled
from around the globe—from highly technical
animation and experimental, cinematic poems
to low-brow, amateurish, sometimes hilariously
crude comedy and commentary. None of the
films is over two minutes long (the shortest of
the shouts is a whopping nine seconds long!).
SASFVF is the oldest
international showcase
of its kind for short
film and provides a
unique springboard for
rookie filmmakers who
may not have the cash
to produce full-length
films or shorts on
expensiv® 35mm and
16mm film stock.
The SASFVF was
created by Beth Hall,
an Atlanta native who
graduated with a fine
arts degree from the
University of Florida
and worked a videog-
rapf »r and graphic
designer. She founded
the festival in 1991
while living in San Francisco after a brief stint
in the production department at CNN in Atlanta.
Last April, she and co-executives Andy
SchachteL Marcus Sprewell, Justin Graham, Pam
Statz, Jeff FasSnacht, and Paul Marchant (for
merly of Athens' Kudzu Film Festival) embarked
on a 15-city tour across North America armed
with 69 entries for judged competition. The tour
was a great success and the top winners were
awarded major cash prizes including a $2500
Best of Festival and a $1000 Best Animation
prize.
Last June, Beth Hall and Athens artist and
Dreamspan partner Jason Thrasher traveled from
Athens to Los Angeles to concentrate their
efforts on building the Dreamspan Network web
site.
The network will provide high quality, inter
active streaming-video footage of SASFVF
entries and new submissions as well as the
debut four video "channels" featuring new
works by filmmakers and videographers. The
"Shortspan" channel will be home to the ever
growing library of festival shorts. The "Monkey
Machine" channel focuses or. Japanimation,
Claymation, cel and 3-D animation and more.
The "Departure Lounge" channel will have
Dreamspan-produced comedy shows (look for a
series called 'The Ugly Little Doll" created by
Mischo McKay, drummer of Athens band Macha).
"Most Powerful Hand" will emphasis documen
taries, travelogues and photography from
around the world. "Skatement" is the future
home of film, video and art by and for skaters.
Currently, the SASFVF is on a lengthy tour of
colleges and universities around the U.S.
hosting an 80-minute program comprised of the
"very best" entries collected over the past eight
years.
Highlights include the loud, comedic Anarchy
Monkey (video), a "promo" praising the attrib
utes of a punk rock-
loving stuffed monkey
doll by Baltimore-
based artist Alex
Roper; five short films
from a series titled
Tales Of Mere Existence,
a string of comedic
confessionals in which
San Francisco artist
Lev Yilmax questions
his sexuality and self-
worth while illus
trating his points by
drawing on foggy
plates of glass; and
the cartoonishly vio
lent To Build A Better
Mousetrap by
Christopher Leone.
Several Athens-based
filmmakers will be featured as well: look for the
redneck expose Red Georgia Nightmare• Episode
1 by Todd Sapre; the blissful Pond by Mark
Steinmetz; Psychic Visions by Chris Jolly (or
"Flicker"); and Crawling Through The Grass by
Angie Grass (also of "Flicker").
Unlike some of the previous screenings of
SASFVF collections, this week's program has
been edited and condensed into a tighter, more
cohesive presentation. Be prepared for a highly-
entertaining slew of fast-paced films unlike any
to be found in the nearby enormoplexes.
This installment of the “Short Attention Span
Film And Video Festival" will screen at the
Georgia Museum of Art M. Smith Griffith
Auditorium on the UGA campus on Friday,
September 8 at 8 p.m. Admission is $3 general
admission. Contact: 542-4662.
