...It's How You Play The Game
FOUR AGAINST ONE Mayor Doc Eldridge has formed a "work team" to help settle the remaining sticking points in the development ordi
nance that will, some day, back up Athens-Clarke's comprehensive land use plan. Coach Eldridge has recruited only Commissioners Linda
Ford, Harry Sims and Ken Jordan to play. ACC Attorney Ernie DePascale, who is supposed to pitch for both teams, will be there to bean
anyone who challenges the coach. ACC Senior Planner Bruce Lonnee and/or other planning staff will referee. Games are scheduled for
September 6, 18, and 25 at 4 p.m., at the Planning Department building, 120 West Dougherty Street. You can watch, but your "Delay the
Vote" sticiceia and “Stay Gmen" ribbons will have to do your cheering for you. (Brad Aaron)
INS AGAINST ONE A year ago we held a sad farewell party for Hans-Peter Dietrich, whose last appeals to stay in this country and in Athens
had been denied by the Immigration and Naturalization Service. He left but quickly came back on some kind of temporary visa, then got a
job teaching German at UGA that allowed him to stay on. Through the inscrutable workings of departmental decisions, Hans-Peter's job went
to someone else, depriving him of his legal standing for remaining in this country. And so, Hans-Peter is leaving again for good (and for
bad). Hans-Peter hopes that the Mental Health Benefit, which he started 11 years ago, can somehow continue in his absence. He will move
to Berlin on Sept. 28, after which time his address will be Schliemannstrasse 41, 10437 Berlin, Germany. E-mail: imissyouso@hotmaiLcom.
TUF IGHT GOES ON Meanwhile, at the Commission meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday night, Sept. 5, there'll be an attempt to impose a moratorium
on further development until the land use plan is enabled. Show up and let them know how you feet Then go back Thursday, Sept. 7 at 7
p.m. to the Planning Department office on Dougherty Street for the Planning Commission meeting that will consider rezoning for Denny
Hill's vast project in the greenbelt out on the Jefferson Road, among other stuff.
