LOST & FOUNDRY
The days dwindle down to a precious few...
HERE'S HOPING Mayor Eldridge should veto the "Oak Grove" project that the ACC Commission approved election night by a 7-3 vote. (See
story on p. 6.) Mayor Eldridge has indicated that he does not want to veto a measure that the Commission passed by a 7-3 vote (the margin
needed to override a veto) because he says that would be "grandstanding." In other words, the Mayoi does not want to bring about a con
frontation with the Commission that will not accomplish anything. That approach is certainly wise and is consonant with the Mayor's
respect for the Commission and his realization that he must work with the Commission for the long haul, even when he disagrees with its
action, as in the Oak Grove vote.
Because of his respect for the Commission, Mayor Eldridge has proven adept at knowing when to stay out of the way and when to step in
and exert leadership, as he did, for instance, in the ongoing relationship between the Commission and the Manager.
The Oak Grove vote is another instance that clearly calls for the Mayor to exert leadership. While the Commissioners were voting inside City
Hall in favor of Oak Grove, the results being tabulated at the Courthouse demonstrated a strong citizen mandate against the sprawl that Oak
Grove represents. The Commission vote in favor of Oak Grove flew in the face of a very clear demonstration of what the majority of Athens-
Clarke citizens want, showing the majority of the Commission to be dangerously out of touch with the citizenry. Here’s hoping the
Commission will allow the Mayor to get it off the hook by acquiescing in a veto that will bring the government back into line with the
clearly expressed will of its citizens.
KORRECTION A printer's error messed up the headline on our cover story last week and also bumped the byline off the page. The pulse
pounding story of the demolition derby at the Elberton fairgrounds was well written by Jennifer Hartley, and the headline should have been,
"Red Electric Is Still In The Race!" Also, the intrepid photographer who captured the action was Pat (not Pete) Smith.
