Their pals The Minus 5—fronted by
R EM. sideman Scott McCaughey—
performed the Bilities tune "You Don!
Mean it’ (composed by bassist Bob
Spires) on ‘Late Night With Conan
O'Brian” back in March. Winder-based
label Backbumer Records released the
band's self-titled, full-length debut last
year and is gearing up to release a new
collection later this fall (hopefully). The
quintet h a s been diligently recording at
its home studio and at Full Moon Studio
with guitaris* Chris Grehan at the helm.
THE RATCAB BLUES EXPLOSION
(Boar's Head) Guitarists John Wayne
(Don't Know) and Pat Gorman (Dave &
The Weird Factor) got blues if you want

this all-star local jam, featuring a
number of heavy cats playing good ol’
blues rock a la Stevie Ray and The
Black Crowes.
THE REAL NICE TIME (Burntstone

traditional bluegrass highlighted by
three-part vocal harmonies.

DQE (Caledonia) Vocalist Grace
Braun—the straight-faced songwriter
who holds her guitar upside-down—
and rock-solid drummer Dugan
Trodglen have been lixtures in the
Atlanta rock underground around these
parts for years. Formerly known as
“Dairy Queen Empire," DQE bangs out
super-fun, minimal party-music in the
vein of the Modern Lovers, Junior
Varsity and The Ramones. The band's
new 19-song album, The Queen 01
Mean (Slow River), features some extra
bass layin', a killer pom-pom raver
called “Go Bananas," and an energetic
cover of Half Japanese's "One Million
Kisses." [BL)
THE F-HOLES (Boar's Head) "Shake

of the major forces in drum'n'bass
today. Based in LA, Hive's sample-
heavy hip hop work has been used for
such spiffy projects as The Matrix, as
well as being affiliated with San
Francisco's Funkatec Collective. Also on
the bill is Greensboro's Daniel, one of
the hottest young DJs on this coast,

Breathlanes drummer leads a cooking
set of straight jazz. 11 p.m.
ROBERT EARL KEEN (Georgia

Hubbard, Terry Allen and Townes Van
Zandt, Keen pens vivid story songs that
can be either slyly humorous or heart-
breakmgly melancholy, depending on
the tone of voice or how warm the beer's
gotten. Unlike his Lone Star State con
temporaries, Keen is enjoying some
success with the college-age crowd,
always ready to raise a beer and sing
along to “The Road Goes On Forever."
Keen's latest is called Gravitational
Forces. See p. 32.
MATH (Tasty World) Playing rich, tex
tured pop-rock that has a spiritual con

Quinlan and drummer Brody Boyer.
Urbosleeks' Steve Miller is helping out

sneering and strumming
their way through a
labyrinth of ritybilly sor
rows, teenage heartbreak
and walls of guitar reverb for
six years. The quintet-
fronted by singer-guitarist
Chris Lopez and lead guitarist Justin Hughes—has released five full-length albums and toured
the continent and elsewhere.
The band, tattered but still standing upright, returns to the forefront this month with its
sixth platter, an unusually joyful five-song EP (available on compact disc and 10" vinyl) titled
Noon Under The Trees (Moodswing). The songs move away from the band's signature reverb-
drenched, post-punk rockabilly sound towards one that's more cinematic and spare. The band
recorded this one at Atlanta's new Zero Return Studios with engineer/producer Brian Paulson
(Polvo, Superchunk, Slint, Jayhawks, etc.) at the helm. The disc hits stores this week just as the
band embarks on an East Coast tour.
Since forming in 1994, the R*A*Ts have gone through several significant lineup changes. The
current roster includes bassist William Joiner and organist Jeffrey Wiggins—both formerly of
local indie-pop act Hard Candy, and Flagpole's own Ballard Lesemann on drums. This seriously
gifted band will never get rich on the stadium circuit
