so his supporting cast falls flat and lan
guishes in his shadow A brooding tale

mysterious Ted Brautigan (Anthony
Hopkins) fascinates a young boy (new

m upstairs Their friendship grows
quickly, as Brautigan treats the boy like
an adult and provides him with an
escape from his self-centered mother
Many ot these scenes work well, and
Yelchm holds his own opposite
Hopkins. However, director Scott Hicks
allows the story's element of fantasy to
bog down their relationship, and his
attempts to make the film resonate are
more melodramatic than emotionally

As he begins to look for the masked

film is more playfully comic and less
tragic than Crouching Tiger. Hidden

released by a studio (or independently

Antoine Fuqua erases any memoiy of

alistic. young police officer (Ethan
Hawke) on his first day of training with
an experienced narcotics detective
(Denzel Washington) Although
Washington has been guilty ol over-
confidence in his recent movies, this
role demands it. as it is essential in
masking his character's morality.
Hawke need only react to Washington s

director Fuqua toy with our emotions,
creating a dubious landscape that is
disturbingly believable Although the
movie ends loo neatly, only a couple of
directors would have had the power to
end this movie the way it should have
Regardless. Training Day is amazing,
and your stomach will still be in knots

Hidden Dragon) plays with the differing
cultural perspectives ot the East and

lorci. conceals his homosexuality from
his conservative parents His boyfriend.
Simon (Mitchell Lichtenstein), decides
that Wa-Tung should marry one of his
tenants, Wei Wei (May Chin), who des
perately needs a green card When his
Taiwanese parents fly to New York tor
the wedding, the cover-up begins
Despite the trim's comic sensibilities,
Lee masterfully instills it with a great
deal ot emotion, thereby giving it an
