“Breakdown: A Benefit For the New
York Firefighter’s Association"
Athens Music Factory
One of the most heartening aspects arising from
the recent tragedies in New York City and
Washington, D.C. is the outpouring of support, both
emotional and financial, of Americans of all stripes
for those affected by the events of September 11.
One particular group affected has been firefighters, and some local electronic and dance music
mavens are honoring those who risked and in many cases surrendered their lives to help others.
"The electronic music scene for too long has been stereotyped by negative images, and it is
time to show people that it can represent something positive," says Kristen Dash, organizer of
"Breakdown: A Benefit For The New York Firefighters Association." "[This benefit is] a way for
UGA students and the people of Athens to feel like they can contribute in a setting that shows
everyone that we Americans will carry on. What better way than to throw a party where people
can have fun and help out at the same time?"
Tonight's Ods represent a wide variety of dance and electronic music, but the main style fea
tured is breaks. Breaks is considered one of the most accessible forms because of its heavy
reliance on old-school hip hop. Atlanta's Sikora will be representing the Peace Continuum and
will have copies of his recently released new single, produced with DJ/producer Lil' Steven.
Charlotte's Synapse, from A:Loud, gathered local fans when he opened for Rennie Pilgrim thanks
to his harder-edged style of U.K.-influenced breaks and dirty house. The local break scene will be
represented by DJs Camilus and Casm. The show is 18 and up. [MT]
