In addition to providing Flagpole readers with
interesting, well-informed insights into the often
ignored wortds of improv and free jazz and experi
mental music. Erik Hinds > is also a musician of
some note, be it his folk and jazz explorations with
vocalist and fellow traveler into the world of “odd
music" Julie Powell or his own free jazz workout the
SS PUFT Trio (an acronym for “Society Should Pay Us
For This). How, Hinds is donning yet another hat to
wear around the Athens music scene: label owner.
Hinds is launching his recently put-into-motion label SolpontkeUo. The label's name comes
from a play on an Italian music phrase that I couldn't describe if I tried—that's why Erik writes
about the stuff he writes about and I write about lunkheaded rock and roll and folk singers—but
the concept fits with the name. Essentially, he says, Solponticello is a repository for forms of
music Hinds finds intriguing and worth supporting, be it free jazz or experimental improv. Right
now, the label's catalogue includes records by Hinds' own SS PUFT Trio, Powell's dasskaUy-tinged
Musk Swims To Me and the Athens-Mississippi electronica collaboration Tog. The label isn't lim
ited to just the esoteric, however, and Hinds says good ol' rock and roll would be welcome at
Solponticello if it catches his ear.
Tonight's release party features the very interesting world-folk combo Dromedary playing its
intriguing blend of ethnic music with off-the-wall instrumentation. Also, soprano vocalist Ellen
Ritchey and pianist Andrew Santander will perform selections from Powell's Musk Swims To Me.
The show starts at 8:30 p.m. and is free to the public. (MT)
