designate us to a fancy little package,’
says bassist Chad Stocker *But we are
a bit of each thing and none of those
all at the same time." The band formed
as a quintet in 2000 and recently
released two EPs on the indie M O B

Luna, Jim White
40 Watt Club
New York-based quartet Luna is riding
into town on the heels of its sixth studio
IP, Romonttca. If the mellow, melodic
grooves on the record are even a hint at
what the band has in store, it should be a
rather tnumphant scene to take m.
RomantKa is a 13-track, bitteryveet and
humorous song cycle that doesn't need to
rest on the haunches of established credi
bility. Produced by the d8's Gene Holder,
and mixed by Flaming Lips accomplice
Dave fridmann, Romantxa sounds damn
good whether you know who the band is
or have never heard it before.
After numerous LPs and a strong
showing on 2001s Luna Live, frontman Dean Wareham and company have proven themselves a
unique staying power, and tney're stilt pushing on with an ingenuity that most acts can't keep up
for more than a record or two.
Are you out the door yet? Stilt not convinced? Mow about the fact that the epic pop act has
recently added bassist Britta Phillips (Ultrababyfat, ex-Betttower), whose saccharine sweet vocals
bring an irresistible element of '50s teen pop harmony to the group? Just check out the brilliant
“Mermaid Eyes* for a glimpse of how convincingly the group can pull off perfect throwback
grooves without sounding the least bit forced.
At the show this week expect a stunning mix of the hits penned over the last 10 years: an
eclectic mix that includes everything from rockers to love ballads, all of which are mildly snarky
and undisputedly affecting. Luna can get you dancing, sulking or reservedly bouncing along, but
whatever effect it has. It's the perfect answer to a laxy summer night.
