Donkey Punch (Lunch Paper, 12:30 a.m.)
Tate off your panties. And get on the bed. The Punch will entertain
you, fuck-o.
Je Suis France (Tasty World, 1:15 a.m.)
Simultaneously the smartest and dumbest band in Athens, which I
intend as a rare compliment. The kids seem to love those wacky
cover tunes. Go see The France. And feel accepted.

Calliope Fair (AthFest Outdoor Stage, 12:20 p.m.)
Talented. The first proper C-Fair full-length should come out in a
splashy DigiPak, like those Putumayo comps.
Asylum Street Spankers (AthFest Outdoor Stage, 2:20 p.m.)
Tin Pan Alley style numbahs about smoking hash and screwing, with
at least one Bill Hicks reference.
Japancakes (AthFest Outdoor Stage, 7:20 p.m.)
Athens’ finest date show for spacy geeks.

FRIDAY. Jt SE 21
The Modfathers (AthFest Outdoor Stage. 5:20 p.m.)
There's something very musical about this music. The
Athens guitar-pop band mixes in plenty of vintage
organ sounds, dusty guitar amp reverb, and floppy
Rmgo drum fills into its hook-filled rave-ups and
rockers. And those sharp haircuts! Once again, the
group is fiddling around with its lineup. Nevertheless,
great way to kick off the activities at the Outdoor
Stage on East Washington Street.
Bloodkin (Georgia Theatre, 12:30 a.m.)
The band's been a major player in the Athens rock scene for nearly
15 years. Danny and Eric and the boys celebrate the release of a new
album titled Rcvin' Beauties earlier this month. Tonight's show is the
official "Athens release party." Will the so-called "guitarmy" (with
cohorts from Barbara Cue and others) take the stage? This one will
surely go late into the night.
Urbosleeks (Caledonia. 1 a.m.)
Almost uncategorizable rock stuff from a clever technically-profi
cient rock band with an unusually positive attitude, best indie-rock
beards in town. And that drummer's pulling double duty!
SATURDAY: JUNE 22
De Novo Dahl (AthFest Outdoor Stage. 12:20 p.m.)
Anglicized guitar-pop from middle Tennessee with as much gloss
and polish as anything coming out of Manchester or London. The
sharp-looking, sharper-sounding six-piece band has a strong fol
lowing at home and could possibly be a standout among the "non
Athens" acts this weekend.
R.U.S.S.I.A. (Athens Music Factory, 10:15 p.m.)
Athens hip hop is blowing up (as they say) and this hard-rhyming
act is smack dab in the middle of the action. The duo works great
slang and attitude into its own style of Dirty South and recorded
some tracks with producer Hano Leathers (ex-Prozak, Belloch). This
whole "Hip Hop Showcase" tonight should be the real deal as far as
local hip hop talent goes.
Michael (40 Watt Club, 11 p.m.)
Last month. Athens alt-rock group Michael officially released its
second full-length album. The Day After My Confidence, a well-pro
duced. moody, expansive collection of melody and ideas. Then sud
denly, drummer (and Nu^i's Space executive director) Bob Sleppy
suffered severe shoulder injuries in a van accident (he's okay now,
thankfully). Watch as guitanst-vocalist David Fairbairn, bassist-key
boardist John Nowicki and guitarist Asa Leffer—in a fit of cama
raderie—welcome drummer James "Fluid" Broussard of local band
Urbosleeks to the stage to sit in... while the bandaged Sleppy han
dles the stage lights from the back room!
North Hollywood Model Search (Engine Room outside,
8 p.m.)
Hey., didn't these guys play a few sweaty "finat
shows" a year back (and a year before that)?!! No
matter. If you and your barfly pals occasionally venture into the
Barmuda Triangle you'll surely recognize these garage-rocker charac
ters. Bnng dancin' shoes. And beer money.
"Solponticello Night" (Flicker Theatre & Bar, 8:45 p.m.)
There's an unusual, newly established label in Athens called
Solponticello Records. It has absolutely nothing to do with indie-
pop. psychedelia, twang or punk. It is totally connected, however,
with the evolving "improv" and instrumental activity gurgling
around the edges of the local rock scene. Under the tutelage of
Athens musician and flagpole writer Erik Hinds. Solponticello cele
brated its official "launch" last October with five full-length
albums ready for proper release. Though not scheduled officially as
a "Solponticello Night," this evening's lineup is exactly that with
compositions and improvisations performed by labelmates Julie
Powell. Kyle Dawkins, the Colin Bragg Ensemble Jeff Crouch and
SS Puft
Koester (40 Watt Club, 12 a m.)
The New York based "experi pop" ensemble—led by songwritin
mastermind Steve Koester (ex Punthdrunk)—returns to Athens with
one hell of a new album under its belt. The High Highs The Low Lows
is Koester s second release, following 2000 s Oh! Turpentine Both
have connections to Athens by way of Pttch-A Tent Records (co-run
by the 40 Watt s Velena Vego). Koester collaborated with Alan
Weathertiead (of Sparklehorse) wholl be on stage with the band
tonight Expect some colorful. Elvis Costetio-meets-Enon meets The
tips stuff that •esembles very little m the local scene at all.
Thumb Attack (Georgia Bar. 12 a.m.)
Ever since they first stumbled out of the 80s and into the quirky
Athens scene in 1992, singer Bryan Cook and his band Thumb Attack
have delivered an endless supply of working-class, lo-fi art-rock to
appreciative audiences. Cook, the stout Athens icon, is best known
perhaps for his work with such '80s Athens bands as Time Toy, Is-
Ought Gap. The Hindu Love Gods and Brian And The Cooks. Some
may remember him performing with Time Toy and yammering about
the local music scene in the 1987 documentary film Athens. Go.:
Inside/Out. Many others may simply know him as "the cool
DePalma's guy." Either way, pay homage tonight.
SUNDAY. JU ME 13
Asylum Street Spankers (AthFest Outdoor Stage, 2:20 p.m.)
No microphones, electric instruments or amplification' This large-
scale vaudevillian Texas ensemble uses acoustic guitars, harmonica,
bass fiddle, clarinet, washboard, ukulele, fiddle, snare drum and
hand saw to get the job done on a slew of old-time tunes from the
70s and '30s and original numbers—many of which involve sex,
reefer, booze and naughtiness in general The Spankers (the band
name refers to old slang describing guitar playing) race into Athens
this afternoon before skeedadling over to Atlanta for a show at
Smith's Olde Bar
Neat Pattman Blues Band (AthFest Outdoor Stage. 6:20 p.m.)
"Big Daddy" Pattman is a great Athenian and a top crowd pieaser
He blows harmonica and sings and wails with more soul than most
of the local rock scene put together Whether with a backup band or
just on stage with his harmonica and microphone, Pattman is a true
blues artist of consummate skill This should be one the afternoon s
definite highlights.
