GIRLS WILL BE WOMEN
The Southern Girls Convention, an annual grass
roots meeting of social justice activists devoted to
empowering women and girls in the Southern states,
comes to town for four days of open forums, sharing
ideas, workshops and celebrating the many facets of
community.
Though there are a number of educational and
entertainment events planned, attendees are encour
aged to bring personal video projects, 'Tines, writing or other forms of expression to share, and
are even offered "guerrilla tables and workshop spaces" to distribute their information. .
Featured guest speakers include Elaine Brown, the first woman Black Panther leader and
Stiver Rights author Constance Curry (her documentary The Intolerable Burden: Public education
and Incarceration in Sunflower County, Mississippi will also be screened). There's music, too, at
the 40 Watt Club, the "One Suit Wonder house* and the Ultramod Compound, including Tami
Hart Ms. July, Snoczer, Ta-Ta's, WauWau Sisters and more. See ABC for the music lowdown.
The convention is fueled by the large number of workshops and film screenings being held at
UGA. Workshops include OIY Herbal Remedies, Women Power in Performance Poetry, Indian
Classical Dance, Women Artists Throughout History, Dealing with Sexual Assault within Radical
