Elf Power,
Rock*A*Teens
Caledonia Lounge
After a tour of the
states and a nearly month
long tour of Europe (where
the band opened for Black
Heart Procession and, last
the rumor mill reported, Rock*A*Teens
The Flaming Lips), Athens
pop-punk mainstay Elf Power returns for a pre-New Year's show at the Caledonia with Atlanta's
Rock*A*Teens in tow.
According to Elf Power bassist Ballard Lesemann (who's also a member of The Rock*A*Teens),
this show and another in Atlanta the following night are not "official" last shows for the R*A*T$.
"We're not making a big deal out of the 12/30 Athens show and 12/31 Atlanta show being
any sort of official 'last shows' or anything—thafs mainly just a hunch," he says. "But it's been a
year since we've played in public, so it's a 're-emergence' if you will. There are no definite plans
for the band beyond New Year's, so its really up in the air. The 12/30 is definitely the last Elf
Power show with Peter Adrian Finch (also of Dances with Wolves) before he and his girlfriend
Mandy move to Tucson, Arizona. Probably the last Elf show for a long while...." So, my advice to
you is get out and see them while you can... [Sarah Lee]
guifarisls Adam Bugbee and Jason
Askew along with bassist Jay Rogers
and drummer Matt Riley. Luckily for the
listener, Cancerstick owes more to Iron
Maiden and Metallica than the current
de-fanged, de-tuned 99X brand of
“metal.“
“LUCID” (Boneshakers) “Drum'n'bass
for the human race.’
“SINGER-SONGWRITER NIGHT”
(DTs) The weekly showcase features a
variety of local “talents.’10 p.m.
“TRASH DISCO” (Boneshakers) DJ
Big Woody keeps the beats flyin' to keep
you up all night.
ELF POWER (Caledonia) Home at last
The Elephant Six rock troubadours
return home from a “glamorous"
European tour to celebrate the new year
with friends. Welcome back.
GARBAGE ISLAND (40 Watt) You say
you want a revolution? Check out the
noisy laboratory of Garbage Island. The
band is comprised of members of Sci
Fu, Maserati and The Dark Cloud. The
"experimental" Athens group has a cer
tain fascination with Kraulrock and
broad improvisation—all with and a
clangy, edgy, metallic bang. (BLl
HOIST (Tasty World) This Thomaston
quintet describes itself as “apocalyptic
metal." Their bio states that they feature
“lyrics of the everyday apocalypse
backed up by a heavy musical blanket
filled with many twists and turns along
the way." Easy for you to say.
MONARCHS OF LUST (10 Watt)
Feedback and noise research from
“world traveler" and guitarist Wilhelm
Hand along with his special guests.
According to the bio, “Monarchs
develops music on a project to project
basis and selects musicians based on
what the music requires. Improvisation
is always a key element in the music."
Tonight’s lineup will be Brent Van
Daley (from Martyr & Pistol) playing
bass. David Wilhelm on guitar. Mitchell
King (Martyr & Pistol) on percussion,
and Andy Robison (Baghouse) on elec
tronics.
MOTHER JACKSON (40 Watt) Meat
and potatoes muscular rock that takes
up where The James Gang left off.
ROCK*A*TEENS (Caledonia)
Cabbagetown's finest return... maybe
for the last time? It's been a while since
we’ve seen 'em and they’re cagey about
their future. If you want to see the post-
alt-pop dabblers, you might want to do
it now. Plus, you get to see Ballard
Lesemann doing double duty as
drummer for the R*A*Ts and bassist for
Elf Power.
1358 (Tasty World) Athens poet, author,
swing music expert and weirdo extraor
dinaire—Bugs—presents a macabre
sound and ima je collage. “I recently felt
the urge to start creating soundscapes."
says Bugg, who published a book of
grim stories and poems titled Cartoons
Al Midnight. The name of the event
refers to the “random sequence of num
bers that is our wor d. We're all stuck in
computers.* Characters from the
Morpheous Movement spin Goth and
Industrial music while artist Bob Biki
displays "tribal industrial steel struc
tures. [BL]

ALL ELSE FAILS (Tasty World) How
'bout a little punk to bash in your new
year? (And I don't mean Vern Troyer).
ANDREW SLACK & FRIENDS
(Chip’s) The Atlanta-based guitarist and
vocalist is a regular picker in local blues
jams. He'll bring his jazzy take on the
“blooze" to Winder with a little help
from his friends.
THE ATHENS A-TRAIN (Athens
Steam Co. Pub) Swing and ballroom
dancing for those who want to usher in
the New Year with class. Watch the fire
works from the patio at midnight and
the champagne wili undoubtedly h e
flowing.
