Athens Mom
sandwich, of course. Those at Gandolfo's New
York Deli (323 E. Broad St., downtown, above
Broad Street Bar & Grill, 546*6500) had been rec
ommended to me by various sources, and I can
confirm that I suppose I could survive up North if
these are widespread. Served until 11 a.m., the
sandwiches are massive enough to fuel you
through the daylight hours, each served on a
Kaiser roll with butter, salt and pepper and con
taining as much grease as their Southern equiva
lents. The Polo Grounds (bacon, egg and American
cheese) and the Upstate (sausage, egg and
American) are apparently the two most popular
offerings, but the Eastport (pastrami, egg and
American) is the one I'd give my loyalty to. The
saltiness of the pastrami plays off nicely against
the sweet egginess of the roll, and the whole
thing remains tasty even after cooling, when
many would degenerate into congealed bluck. All
but two of the choices will run you S3 and
change, not bad when you consider 1) that they're
the size of a hamburger, and 2) that it's an entire
breakfast crammed into a roll. Juices and such
also available. Friendly dude behind the counter
will have your order packed and ready to go in a
jiffy, and you can hum along to EKYs "Evil
Woman* while you wait.
Hosanna: Going on nine years in Athens and
having attended not a few shows in my time here,
I had never yet. until last week, experienced the
true joy of a JB dog from JB's Polish Sausage,
the cart for which is usually parked outside the 40
Watt late at night. Gubgoing results in loss of
valuable nutrients and electrolytes, especially at a
sold-out show, and what else will put those back
in a hurry? The JB dog is the local music patron's
Gatorade. If you're still sober, you might balk at
the price (S4), but emotionally considered, it is •
worth every crumpled dollar bilL The dogs them
selves are not that special but dosed with 'come
back sauce" (not for the weak of stomach),
sauteed onions and peppers and a line of yellow
mustard—ketchup is available as well if you can't
take your hot dog like a man—and cradled in a
soft, white bun, they become revelatory. The man
himself maintains a cheery attitude, handing out
affectionate sobriquets along with the food. There
are veggie dogs as well, of which I hear goodness
but cannot vouch for their quality.

Elks: Readers, when you tell me to go someplace,
I will go. It might take me a while, but eventually.
I'll get around to it. Recently, I was tipped that
the buffet at the Elks Gub (185 Ben Burton Rd.,
a little past the mall 543-3669) was worth a
visit. It was, at very least, an interesting experi
ence. Being yet young and not antlered, I didn't
feel exactly at home in the dining room, though
this was no fault of the welcoming staff. The
buffet was a bit depleted, but yet contained green
beans (tasty but with slices of bacon floating in
the serving dish; fine by me, but no doubt a
turnoff to veggie folk), mashed potatoes (almost
too buttery), mammoth stuffed peppers (with rice
and meat) and Salisbury steak. Salad and soup
(potato-bacon) were over to the right. Music
floated from what seemed to be a boombox under
the buffet table. Dessert, brought to the table,
consisted of a brownie topped with walnuts,
served on a plate and with a largely superfluous
fork. My source indicated that take-out plates are
an option, or you can go for all-you-can-eat at
S7.95. The Elks Club offers lunch weekdays and is
located toward the back of a winding office park,
past police training facilities and the like.
What Up: Jot 'Em Down Country Store & BBQ on
Whitehall Rd. has expanded to Sunday hours (11
a.m.-5 p.m.), making it the only non-corporate
barbecue joint in town open every day. Five Star
Day Caf6 downtown has implemented an all-you-
can-eat night on Tuesdays. Fire Mountain Grill on
Epps Bridge Rd. is open. Everybody's noticing the
sign for Taste of India in the window of the
former Po'Bo/s location on Broad downtown, but
nobody seems to know what's up. Jittery Joe's is
adding two more locations in town, one in the
brick building by Schlotzsk/s in Alps Shopping
Center and one across from Bread Basket on
8oulevard, and is planning on moving into the
national franchise business. Bombay Caf6 swears
it's adding both meat and alcohol to the menu.
And Taqueria La Parnlla is open in its new, larger
space in the Homewood Shopping Center on
Jefferson Rd. Big City Bread will be closed for
Spring Cleaning, May 2-3, but will re-open bright
and early on Wednesday, May 4.
