Jupiter Coyote,
Sun Domingo
Last Call
,
I have to admit I
was a little envious of
Sun Domingo the last
time I saw the band
play. They were tearing
things up at a packed
Peachtree Tavern in
Atlanta, so much so
that two uninhibited
young ladies hopped ~
on stage and‘started
dirty dancing against
each other and singer-bassist Jason Pomar (during, poetically, a cover of the Violent Femmes
“Blister in the Sun*). A couple of blush-inducing minutes passed before someone eased the
women off the stage. Tm still not sure if the jealousy came more from watching Pomar smile as
the girls doubled his pleasure, or, as a musician, the fact that nobody missed a beat
Such is Sun Domingo's quest for perfection. Though a relatively new outfit—the guys have
only been playing out for eight months—the band has already performed more than IOC dates
and worked itself into a tight live act What came off as a pleasant, if middling, set of coven and
originals just a few months ago can now knock your socks off (or make you want to hump the
bassist apparently). Not content to stick with the two-to-three hours of material they have
worked up in the last year, the four-piece (Pomar, Forrest Burtnette, Brian Chenault and Edge!
Groves Jr.) continues to work in new material and have even taken to trading instruments on
certain songs.
The same work ethic can be seen in their recordings. A self-titled EP, which came out as they
started touring, satisfies. Some newer demos, available on their website, already top the EP. “AU
in the Business' is an unabashed piece of power pop, replete with roving harmonies, overdriven
guitars and jiggling tambourines. The lyrics seem to hint at their own ambitions: “I wanna work
seven days a week /1 wanna go to bed thinking Fm somebody.* (Tom Bavis]
