Richie Havens
Georgia Theatre
Iconic folk troubadour
Richie Havens has been
in the music world since
1961, but his career
really took flight eight
years later. At 5:07 p.m.,
August 15, 1969, to be
exact That's the moment
Havens walked on-stage
in Bethel, NY. The show
was a little event called
the Woodstock! Husic and
Art Fair. Haven* was the
first act to play the his
toric event and he
opened the show with
the prophetic “High
Flyin' Bird."
According to the Woodstock remembrances, every time Havens tried to end his set, he was
told to continue playing. The other acts hadn't arrived yet and the promoters feared that if the
stage was bare, the ever-growing crowd would get restless, finally, after Havens had played for
over two hours, including three Beatles songs and endlessly vamping on his final song,
“Freedom*—seen in the Woodstock documentary—some of the other acts arrived via helicopter.
Havens continues to be a man of peace and still takes his gentle message on the road,
playing a variety of colleges, dubs and theaters, armed with his road-honed acoustic guitar and
his unique style of playing. Havens doesn't make traditional box chords, his style is actually an
intensely strummed rhythm, with actual chord coloring taking a distant secondary role in the
overall sound. Groce of the Sun is the new album. Try it ttfs fun. [Lee Valentine Smith)
